Godzilla Minus One Gets Towering New Poster After Box Office Hit Gets Surprise Oscars Attention

Godzilla Minus One gets a towering new poster as the Japanese monster movie celebrates some surprise Oscars attention. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the new movie isn’t a part of Legendary’s Monsterverse, but a standalone entry produced by Toho, the studio responsible for the titular kaiju’s creation. Godzilla Minus One‘s reviews have been overwhelmingly positive and the film has been a big hit at the box office, exceeding expectations in almost every regard.

Now, the official Godzilla Minus One account on X, formerly known as Twitter, has shared a new “For Your Consideration” poster for the film. Check out the poster below:

The caption celebrates that the film has been included as part of the Best Visual Effects Academy Awards shortlist, the first ever Japanese movie to achieve this. The film is one of ten to be included on the short list, with the five official nominees to be announced on January 23, 2024.

Godzilla Minus One Is A Triumph

Yamazaki’s film being the first ever Japanese movie to make the Best Visual Effects shortlist is only one of its many accomplishments. Godzilla Minus One‘s box office run has been a massive success, with the film currently standing at over $70.7 million worldwide. This is made all the more impressive considering the film was made on a budget of only $15 million, a fraction of what Legendary’s Monsterverse movies cost, while boasting VFX that meet or exceed those featured in big Hollywood productions.

Critically, the film has also been a pleasant surprise, with critics praising the film’s exploration of post-war Japan in the narrative, which, of course, mirrors the real-life period of Godzilla’s original creation in 1954. While the story, in its broadest terms, is relatively simple, Godzilla Minus One is a testament to the fact that spectacle-driven monster movies can still feature strong characters and themes with an emotional throughline.

It remains to be seen if whether Hollywood will learn the right lessons from Godzilla Minus One‘s success, but the kaiju is set to return to the big screen in an entirely different form in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. While making the short list alone is an achievement worth celebrating, the continued positivity surrounding Yamazaki’s movie suggests it has a real shot at making the nominations list and potentially even winning, though other Best VFX shortlist entries like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Creator are sure to represent some tough competition.

Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One is the first Godzilla film released by Toho since 2016’s Shin Godzilla. Minus One is a reimagining of the original 1954 Godzilla and takes the franchise back to its roots by exploring the harsh life of post-war Japan. The story follows Koichi Shikishima, a failed kamikaze pilot, who struggles with survivor guilt as a giant monster attacks the city.
