Godzilla Minus One Box Office Leaps Back Onto Chart With Black-And-White Re-Release

Godzilla Minus One has charged back onto the box office chart. The new Toho movie, which follows Godzilla rampaging through post-World War II Japan, is the 33rd Japanese-language entry in the franchise and the 38th overall. It has smashed a variety of records since its December 2023 debut, including becoming the highest-grossing live-action Japanese movie ever released in domestic theaters. However, it hasn’t made an appearance on the domestic box office Top 10 chart during the first few weekends in January.

Per Deadline, the Godzilla Minus One box office is set to earn $2.5 million by the end of the weekend. The movie, which was just re-released in a black-and-white edition titled Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, has seen a huge 264% leap week over week. This places it at No. 10 on the chart for the weekend, marking the first time it has charted in the Top 10 in four weeks since it was No. 10 over the Christmas 3-day weekend (though it was knocked to No. 12 over the 4-day holiday weekend).

Godzilla Minus One Is Having an Epic January

The success of the black-and-white Godzilla Minus One release is just one more feather in the cap for this record-breaking franchise installment. In fact, it closes out two weeks of untold success for the new giant monster movie. The project passed the $100 million milestone worldwide as of January 17, cementing its status as the highest-grossing Godzilla movie from Japan.

This week has also seen the movie reach an untold level of critical success. When the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced on January 23, Godzilla Minus One earned a nod for Best Visual Effects. This marks the first time in the 70-year history of the franchise that one of the Godzilla movies has been nominated for an Academy Award.

This re-release for Godzilla Minus One has given the movie an opportunity to continue climbing up the chart and surpassing more worldwide milestones in the coming weeks. However, even if it slumps back off the chart next weekend, the movie is still an incredible success by any measure. Especially if it wins an Oscar, its impending digital and home media release is likely to be huge as well, considering its record-breaking theatrical numbers.
