Godzilla Minus One Box Office Hits Another Major Milestone, Surpassing Oscar-Winning Parasite

Godzilla Minus One has surpassed Parasite at the United States box office, hitting a major milestone for foreign language films. The newest entry in the Godzilla franchise sees the famed monster attacking postwar Japan in the late 1940s. The film has been praised for going back to the roots of the 1954 original while presenting a compelling human story about the trauma of war.

Now, Toho has confirmed that Godzilla Minus One‘s box office has crossed $55 million in the United States, beating the Oscar-winning 2019 film Parasite‘s $53.3 million. It also surpassed the $53.7 million made by 2002’s Hero, making the latest kaiju movie the third highest-grossing foreign film in the US. The film is still playing in the US until February 1, meaning that number could still climb higher.

How Much Bigger Will Godzilla Minus One’s US Box Office Get?

Godzilla Minus One Box Office Hits Another Major Milestone, Surpassing Oscar-Winning Parasite

The newest film from the famed monster is just behind 1997’s Life is Beautiful, which earned $57.6 million at the domestic box office. While the monster movie is likely to pass it, the film is unlikely to make it beyond Number 1, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which took in $128 million during its US run. However, with the limited release of the black-and-white Godzilla Minus One Minus Color, the film may at least prove a strong Number 2 for foreign films in US theaters.

Despite Godzilla Minus One‘s limited release, the movie has been hailed as one of the best in the franchise, explaining is major box office success. Because of how strong word of mouth for the movie has been, it makes sense that it has continued to skyrocket in popularity. While it’s unlikely to make as much money has Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the movie will no doubt make its mark as a foreign release in the US.

Because of its global success, earning over $100 million worldwide, it’s likely that a Godzilla Minus One sequel will be announced, even if it hasn’t been confirmed yet. If it is, then it’s possible Toho will be able to replicate the first movie’s success through a global release deal. With one more week left for the movie domestically, it remains to be seen just how high its box office will climb.
