Godzilla Gets a Neon Genesis Evangelion Redesign in Sick New Fanart

Shin Godzilla is the 2016 film reimagining of the famous kaiju by famed creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hideaki Anno. Now, in an impressive piece of fan art, these two popular properties are combined as Godzilla becomes Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Lilith.

Shin Godzilla is a retelling of Godzilla’s origin in which politicians struggle with bureaucratic red tape and the politics behind a giant kaiju attack while Godzilla wreaks havoc on Japan. The film has been praised for bringing Godzilla back to his roots as a symbol of nuclear devastation. Godzilla’s design in the film is a departure from his normal look, but the King of Monsters retains his iconic tail and dorsal fins. This redesign was already more nightmarish than most depictions of the classic kaiju, but that scare factor was just ramped up in new fan art.

Posted on Twitter by @DanDagouglas, is a piece of fan art that fuses Shin Godzilla with the angel Lilith from Evangelion. Lilith, also known as the Second Angel, is the creator of all humanity in Evangelion’s mythos and serves as an important antagonist. The fan art perfectly combines Evangelion’s Lilith with Godzilla, reimagining Godzilla as the antagonist of the popular series. The body of Godzilla is placed on the cross and speared through the heart with the Lance of Longinus, just as Lilith was in Evangelion. Godzilla, also like Lilith, can be seen wearing a mask over its monstrous face.

What makes the artwork shine though are all the little details. In Shin Godzilla, audiences were introduced to “Godzilla Fifth Form” which is characterized by humanoid creatures that can be seen on the end of Godzilla’s tail. These humanoid creatures can also be seen in this fan art, crawling their way out of Godzilla’s stomach just as the flesh protrudes from Lilith’s. This fan art highlights the similarities between two of Hideaki Anno’s biggest works and expertly combines them into one grotesque masterpiece. Seeing the already monstrous Shin Godzilla fuse with Lilith creates a truly haunting piece of art that is far more eldritch than most depictions of the world’s most famous Kaiju. This fan art is a fitting artistic crossover of two of Hideaki Anno’s most devilish creations.

Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion are both massively popular in their own right, but they are even better together, as evidenced by this epic fanart. Daniel Douglas takes two properties conceived by the legendary Hideaki Anno and mashes them up, leaving us with one iconic piece of fanart. Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion proved to be great subjects for fan art.
