God Of War Ragnarök PS4 vs PS5: Differences Explained

God Of War Ragnarök PS4 vs PS5: Differences Explained

God of War Ragnarök will be taking advantage of the processing power of the PlayStation 5 while also giving PlayStation 4 owners the ability to play the game with some compromises to fidelity and performance. Although players can experience the game’s story just the same on either console, there are some differences that players should know before going in. Santa Monica Studio revealed to fans what precisely the performance differences will be.

Just as 2018’s God of War had noticeable differences on PC compared to PS4, Santa Monica Studio’s official Twitter account confirmed platform discrepancies in a post detailing all the graphics modes that will be coming to PS5, PS4 Pro, and base PS4. The base PS4 version will not have any graphics options available, only PS4 Pro owners will be able to adjust performance modes. The base PS4 version will run at 30 FPS and will be in 1080p resolution. PS4 Pro owners will have access to two graphics settings, one that favors quality and another that favors performance. Unfortunately, neither option allows PS4 Pro users to play God of War Ragnarök with a minimum 60 FPS.

God Of War Ragnarök Has Multiple Graphics Modes On PS5

God Of War Ragnarök PS4 vs PS5: Differences Explained

On PS5, God of War Ragnarök hits 120 FPS with a 2.1 HDMI cable for some players. Owners of the current-gen console will have six different graphics modes. Each has varying frame rates and resolutions. Three of the modes aim to achieve 60 frames per second (two with unlocked frame rates), with the other three sacrificing 20-30 frames for maximum fidelity. Besides frames and fidelity, the PS5 version of Ragnarök will also allow players to get back into action faster. No loading takes place throughout the game just like the original, but if a player gets a game over PS5 users will have less of a wait time.

The last feature exclusive to the PS5 version of God of War Ragnarök is the DualSense controller. GoW Ragnarök even has an official DualSense controller to commemorate the game’s release, allowing players to explore the Norse realms in style. Those interested in the controller should know that it will only be purchasable for a limited amount of time. Players who didn’t replay 2018’s God of War on PS5 will be able to experience the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for the first time in the series. The PS4’s DualShock 4 will still rumble just as it did for the first installment, but the DualSense’s functionality is more immersive.

Regardless of what version of God of War Ragnarök players are able to experience, the game is already being reviewed as a masterpiece on both consoles. Considering the difficulties some have had in acquiring a PS5, it’s fortunate that Santa Monica Studio was willing to give its player base the option to play the game on the last generation of hardware.
