God of War Ragnarok Producer Shares Message For GoW 2018’s Birthday

In a special message for God of War 2018’s fourth anniversary, Cory Barlog informed fans that God of War: Ragnarök still isn’t ready to enter the spotlight. God of War 2018 marked a soft-reboot for the long-running PlayStation franchise when it hit store shelves on this day – April 20 – four years ago. Having killed off the Greek pantheon in a rage, Kratos eventually found himself in Scandinavia living somewhat of a quieter life with a wife and son.

The brand’s most recent entry, then, saw Kratos battling larger-than-life beings from Norse mythology. And the little that’s been shown of God of War: Ragnarok makes it clear his days of duking it out with the Gods won’t soon come to an end. At the very least, Kratos and his son, Atreus, may find themselves on the receiving end of Thor’s iconic hammer, Mjölnir. But there still exists no word on when exactly players can expect to return to God of War’s Norse saga.

In honor of God of War 2018’s fourth anniversary, Santa Monica Studio posted a video message from Creative Director Cory Barlog. The developer thanks fans for the ongoing support, then transitions into briefly discussing God of War: Ragnarok – “the elephant in the room.” Barlog, who isn’t directing the new title, noted the team remains hard at work on the project, and while he’d love nothing more than to share firm details, “it’s just not ready to be shown.” When that time will come presently remains a mystery. Naturally, the message raises more questions about God of War: Ragnarok’s 2022 release window. Santa Monica Studio and Sony previously pushed the game out of 2021 and into 2022, yet Ragnarok’s gameplay reveal from late last year made no mention of a potential launch period. The year’s still young, though, so perhaps the developer and publisher intend to target a late 2022 rollout for Kratos’ and Atreus’ eagerly-anticipated adventure.

Sony originally announced the God of War sequel during PlayStation’s PS5 games showcase in September 2020. The title finally resurfaced during another PlayStation showcase in September 2021, wherein Santa Monica Studio unleashed a first look at the action-packed gameplay. In the many months since then, little else has been revealed. However, one developer did recently tease that God of War: Ragnarok is playable in some form.

God of War: Raganök is expected to hit PS4 and PS5 in 2022.
