God Of War Ragnarök Director Reveals Secret NPC Easter Egg Only He Knows

The director of God of War Ragnarok has a secret regarding an NPC that appears for only a few seconds in the game. As fans continue their journey with Kratos and Atreus through the Nine Realms of Norse Mythology, more of the game’s many secrets are being uncovered. Much like its critically acclaimed predecessor from 2018, God of War Ragnarok has no shortage of collectibles and Easter Eggs for players to find. Yet some secrets remain hidden to even the most meticulous of players.

In a recent episode of IGN’s Podcast Beyond: Spoilercast, as reported by GamesRadar, God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams sat with the IGN crew to discuss many of the secrets players might have missed during the adventure. One secret he revealed, in particular, was that during the early game of God of War Ragnarok, Odin was in disguise and hiding in plain sight amidst the dwarves of Svartalfheim. When Kratos and Atreus arrive by boat in Svartalfheim, specifically Nidavellir, the dwarven occupants of the city begin to run away in fear of the pair. Amidst this scene, a brief moment occurs where one dwarf spits at the two from atop a bridge. Surprisingly, according to Williams, this fleeting NPC is none other than the All-Father himself.

Odin Is A Master Of Disguise In God Of War Ragnarök

While the dwarf is relatively far away and onscreen only momentarily, players who inspect the dwarf more closely may notice a few resemblances to Odin in his features. Specifically, the shape of the dwarf’s head and many of his facial features are nearly identical to the All-Father’s. The most telling is that despite the disguise of the God of War Ragnarok villain, the dwarf appears to be wearing an eyepatch, an aesthetic trademark of Odin’s. Given the sour relationship between Kratos and Odin, it’s also no surprise he would spit at him given the opportunity.

While this Easter egg would be almost impossible for players to discern on their own, it’s still a commendable detail for Williams to share. The fact that Odin could be anywhere in the game only helps reinforce his scheming nature and make him more of an ominous presence in the world. Although a far cry from most other depictions of Odin, which show the All-Father as a mighty warrior and often benevolent in nature, like Anthony Hopkins in the Marvel movies, Odin from God of War Ragnarok is far more manipulative and much more antagonistic due to the consequences his actions have had on everyone in the Nine Realms.

The Odin Dwarf Easter Egg is another example of how much effort went into God of War Ragnarok‘s creation. With such attention to detail, one has to wonder if there are any other secrets that Eric Williams has yet to reveal. Although this cameo may have slipped past most players, it’s likely there’s much more remaining to be discovered in God of War Ragnarok.
