God of War Ragnarok Dev Insists It’s Still Launching in 2022

A God of War: Ragnarök developer has assured fans that the eagerly-awaited sequel is still coming to PlayStation consoles this year. Following God of War: Ragnarok’s delay out of 2021, neither Santa Monica Studio nor Sony Interactive Entertainment has so much as offered a hint about when in 2022 the title will arrive. To the delight of many, PlayStation’s September 2021 games showcase ended with a first look at gameplay, yet the trailer didn’t even feature a line of text about the potential release window.

It should come as no surprise, then, that some fans remain convinced the new God of War entry will not launch until 2023 at the earliest. The hope was that Santa Monica Studio would clear the air yesterday, April 20, since it marked the fourth anniversary of God of War 2018’s release. While a message from franchise veteran Cory Barlog celebrated the occasion, he only noted that GoW: Ragnarok still isn’t ready for primetime. When such a day will finally come presently remains a mystery.

In response to a tweet from God of War: Ragnarok Animation Director Bruno Velazquez, one fan asked the developer to confirm whether or not the sequel remained on track for a 2022 rollout. Velazquez replied not too long thereafter, simply telling followers that “Ragnorok [sic] is coming this year.” It’s worth noting, of course, that Santa Monica Studio itself has yet to reaffirm its launch plans for the latest Kratos-starring adventure. See the Twitter exchange in the post linked below:

While one developer reassuring skeptical fans may seem proof enough of God of War: Ragnarok’s impending 2022 release, Sony itself has still yet to lift the lid on launch details. For the time being, then, God of War faithful would do well to take the above information with a grain of salt. But precedent suggests firm details on the matter could surface only a few months before the title hits store shelves.

Many may recall that Santa Monica Studio and Sony didn’t announce God of War 2018’s due date until late January that year – a little less than three months before its arrival on April 20. Similarly, the June 2021 release for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart remained under lock and key until February of that year. If God of War: Ragnarok is internally slated for late 2022, reason indicates Sony may hold onto the specifics well into the summer months.

God of War: Ragnarök is expected to hit PS4 and PS5 in 2022.
