Glass 2: 10 Ways M. Night Shyamalan’s Superhero Universe Can Continue

Glass 2: 10 Ways M. Night Shyamalan’s Superhero Universe Can Continue

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Glass!

Although Glass 2 hasn’t been officially announced, there are all kinds of ways that M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass superhero universe can continue, and here are the 10 most exciting possibilities for doing this. Shyamalan’s Glass franchise surprisingly came together after a twist reveal in Split, with the massive crossover movie from 2019 proving that the director’s risky plan could actually work. While the film was a big financial hit, there hasn’t been any word on an official sequel to Glass, even though there are plenty of ways that the beloved superhero franchise could continue on into the future.

M. Night Shyamalan’s 2000 film Unbreakable was one of the director’s earliest major hits, with the superhero movie being one of the highlights of Shyamalan’s career. Despite the film’s success, Unbreakable was a stand-alone movie for a long time, with this only changing in 2016 with the release of another Shyamalan film: Split. Although the film focused on different characters, the twist ending of Split revealed that it shared a universe with Unbreakable, with David Dunn appearing at the end. This led to the creation of Glass, and here’s how the film may not be the end of the series.

Glass 2 Can Explore The Reveal Of Superheroes To The World

Paying Off Glass’ Twist Ending

The ending of Glass featured a major change to the status quo of Shyamalan’s superhero universe, one that can continue to be explored in Glass 2. At the end of the film, it is revealed that Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah Price was using the events of Glass to plan a grand reveal to the world that superheroes are actually real. Price succeeds in this plan, with the movie ending as the Clover organization is defeated and the truth about superheroes is made clear.

A film exploring the ways in which the world changes after learning that superheroes are real would be incredibly interesting, and this is a path that Glass 2 could take. Although it isn’t known exactly what route this story would take, there are all kinds of interesting narratives that could be told in the wake of Price’s big reveal at the ending of Glass, with Glass potentially only being the beginning of the cinematic universe.

Other Heroes & Villains Created By Elijah Price Can Be Highlighted

More Characters Could Pop Up

James McAvoy as Kevin in a psychiatric facility in Glass

Elijah Price is one of the most interesting characters in the Glass universe, as his role in orchestrating the events of the films can set up an all-new film. The twist in Unbreakable is that Elijah Price crashed the train that David Dunn was on in order to confirm that he was indestructible, with this being the conclusion of his hunt for a real superhero. Furthermore, Glass reveals that Price was behind the creation of Kevin Wendell Crumb, the supervillain from Split, showing that Price had his hands in every corner of the superhero universe.

Due to the amount of time that passed between Unbreakable and Glass, it is entirely possible that Elijah Price could have discovered more superheroes and supervillains. These new characters can be introduced in Glass 2, continuing the universe despite the fact that all three of the franchise’s main characters died at the end of the third film.

Elijah Price Can Get His Own Prequel Movie

Finally Explaining His Origin Story

Unbreakable and Glass spends a lot of time hinting at the tragic backstory of the titular villain Elijah Price, setting up how he became Mr. Glass. Price’s mother Mrs. Price even plays a major role in Glass, further connecting the story of the trilogy to Price’s past. Thus, it makes sense that the Glass franchise would continue by leaning into this aspect more, meaning that an Elijah Price prequel could be better than a proper Glass sequel.

A Glass prequel could explore how Elijah Price’s powerful intellect came to be, with it giving even more context to the events of Unbreakable, Split, and Glass. By the time that Elijah Price is met in Unbreakable, he has clearly been looking to prove the existence of superheroes for years, and these years of failed searches could be part of what is explored in a Glass prequel.

The History & Origin Of The Clover Organization

There Is A Lot Left Unexplained

A sniper from the Clover organization in Glass

The twist at the end of Glass shook the entire franchise up, as it revealed that an entire secret society was in existence, with this being something that could be explored in a future movie. In Glass, it is revealed that the Clover organization has been operating in the background of the universe for years, with them working to secretly suppress the existence of superheroes and supervillains by convincing them that they aren’t actually super.

The existence of a massive organization like this brings to light all kinds of questions regarding how the logistics of something like this actually works, with the origins of Clover needing some explanation. A Glass prequel focusing on the early years of the Clover organization would be incredibly interesting, fleshing out the franchise and adding even more to the ending of Glass.

Glass 2 Could Follow Dr. Ellie Staple’s Future

What Happens To Her Next?

Sarah Paulson as Dr. Staple and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke in a psychiatric facility in Glass

Sarah Paulson’s Dr. Ellie Staple is one of the most significant new additions to Glass, and she could be the focus of Glass 2. Ellie Staple is the doctor who is in charge of watching over the three patients at Raven Hill Memorial, with her acting like the main antagonist of the film. It is revealed that Ellie Staple is a major player in the Clover organization at the end of the film, and this twist sets up a fantastic path forward for a sequel.

Since Elijah Price is successful in revealing the existence of superheroes to the world, this means that Ellie Staple failed the Clover organization in Glass, meaning that some major consequences may come for her in the future. It could be that Ellie Staple is given a task to earn forgiveness from Clover, or it could be that she turns against the secret society, with both of these being great possibilities for Glass 2.

More Raven Hill Patients Could Appear In Future Movies

They Can’t Be The Only Ones

Sarah Paulson as Dr. Staple in an Italian restaurant in Glass

Although Raven Hill is the main location and setting of Glass, very little about the hospital is revealed in the film, with this opening up the possibilitiy for more future stories in the Glass universe. Glass revealed that Raven Hill was an institute used by the Clover organization to gaslight superheroes into thinking that they aren’t super, and while the film focuses on these methods being used by David, Kevin, and Elijah, it may be that they aren’t the only ones who have been subjected to this treatment.

It is entirely possible that more superheroes and supervillains have been patients at Raven Hill, with Glass 2 being able to follow their stories. These successfully gaslit superheroes could realize that they are actually super after the reveal that heroes exist at the end of Glass, opening up a new chapter in Shyamalan’s superhero universe.

4

Bruce Willis’ The Overseer Can Get A Proper Unbreakable 2

An Unbreakable Midquel

Although Bruce Willis’ David Dunn appears in all three movies in Shyamalan’s cinematic universe, a true story centering on Dunn as The Overseer hasn’t been shown. Unbreakable is Dunn’s origin story, Split only features a cameo from Dunn, and Glass sees Dunn being housed in a hospital for most of the film, with his true superheroic activities not really getting the time to shine.

Sadly, Bruce Willis’ The Overseer died in Glass, meaning that a true sequel can’t happen anymore. However, a movie set in between Unbreakable and Glass could follow David Dunn as he and his son take down various threats, with this midquel story being a fantastic way to further flesh out M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero franchise. Although this may be hard to pull off, it is one of the only ways to continue the franchise with its original main character.

3

Glass 2 Can Follow Casey, Joseph, & Mrs. Price

Glass’ Non-Super Main Characters

Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey, Charlayne Woodard as Mrs. Price, and Spencer Treat Clark as Joseph at the end of Glass

Although the three main super characters in M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero universe are dead, the cast of Glass extends beyond Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Samuel L. Jackson. Casey, Joseph, and Mrs. Price are the three main non-superhero characters in Glass, with the ending of the film focusing on their attempt to fully reveal superheroes to the world. Although they are sidelined when compared to their superhero co-stars, Glass 2 could finally be thier time to shine.

Glass 2 could be a tense thriller focusing on the Clover organization attempting to hunt down Casey, Joseph, and Mrs. Price in an attempt to make them pay for revealing Clover’s secret. It could also be that the Glass trio spends the sequel hunting down other superheroes and supervillains, building off of the wild twist ending of Glass.

2

Unrelated Superheroes Can Populate The Glass Universe

They Have To Exist In Other Places

Bruce Willis as David Dunn, Spencer Treat Clark as Joseph Dunn, and M. Night Shyamalan in Glass

Although the Glass trilogy focuses on the origin stories of Elijah Price, David Dunn, and Kevin Wendell Crumb, it could be that they aren’t the only heroes in the franchise. It has been established that superheroes exist in the Glass universe, and while Elijah Price created both of the franchise’s main supers, they might not be the only ones that exist.

It is possible that superheroes completely unrelated to the main characters of Glass exist all throughout Shyamalan’s franchise, as it makes sense for more to be in existence due to Elijah Price being convinced that they do in Unbreakable. Future Glass movies could be the start of an even grander cinematic universe akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one that contains all kinds of superheroes that populate many different corners of the franchise.

More M. Night Shyamalan Movies Can Be Connected To The Glass Universe

Continuing The Split & Unbreakable Trend

One of the most interesting ways to continue the Glass universe would be to connect even more M. Night Shyamalan movies to the franchise. The Glass series was kicked off by connecting Unbreakable to Split, with the two seemingly unconnected movies being merged together to create the crossover film. There is no reason for Unbreakable and Split to be the only movies that could do this, as all kinds of Shyamalan movies could exist in this connected universe.

Movies like The Village and Lady in the Water contain odd supernatural elements that could be connected to Unbreakable, Split, and Glass, allowing even more M. Night Shyamalan characters to exist in the franchise. Even movies like Old could be connected, as both Old and Glass feature secret societies that may have similar roots. This would be the best way to quickly expand the franchise, with even more movies being connected to Glass 2.
