Girls5eva Season 3 Gets Positive Update

Girls5eva Season 3 Gets Positive Update

Girls5Eva star Sara Bareilles shares an optimistic update on the show’s return. Bareilles plays Dawn in the comedy, created by Meredith Scardino, with Tina Fey and Robert Carlock serving as executive producers. The story follows Dawn as she reforms her one-hit-wonder girl group from the 2000s, named Girls5eva, to mixed results. The show, which also stars Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Renée Elise Goldsberry, was canceled by Peacock after two seasons in October 2022 but was revived by Netflix.

In comments to TheWrap, Bareilles gave a positive update on Girls5eva season 3 and sounded optimistic that new episodes could arrive on Netflix soon. The Grammy-winning artist and Emmy-nominated actor detailed the show’s progress and the steps remaining, noting that the comedy could return early next year but added there was no specific date yet. Read Bareilles’ quote below:

“I’m going in for my ADR sessions in the next couple weeks, and I know that our creatives are locking the edits and they’re working on sound mix and all that stuff. All of that had stopped, so there was a pretty deep interruption of that flow. So we’re hoping for early next year, but we don’t have an actual date yet.”

How Girls5eva Was Saved By Netflix?

Girls5eva Season 3 Gets Positive Update

Peacock was not interested in picking up Girls5eva for season 3, as the streamer had signaled a shift away from comedies. Sensing that the series would be canceled, executive producer David Miner was among those who worked to save the comedy show. In the end, the previous connections that the creative team had proved fruitful. A conversation was started with Netflix, who previously worked with Fey and Carlock on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt after NBC declined to move forward with the show. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt would go on to become a notable, acclaimed series for Netflix. It lasted four seasons, including the 2020 interactive movie Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs the Reverend.

Miner, along with fellow representative Richard Weitz, knew that Netflix executives were fond of Girls5eva. That included comedy executive Tracey Pakosta, who tried to push for the musical comedy when she was at NBC. That level of agreement between executives ultimately led to a deal where Netflix picked up Girls5eva season 3 with non-exclusive rights to the first two seasons, which are still available on Peacock.

The ladies of Girls5eva are headed to Texas on tour, but there are a lot of things going on and storylines that need to be addressed in a new season.

Netflix previously had success in terms of taking another platform’s low-rated series and turning it into a global hit, as it’s done with Cobra Kai and the romantic thriller YOU. With its pitch-perfect performances, absurd humor, and catchy songs, Girls5eva may well be the next show to find massive success. Perhaps, like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, it could get nominated for a slew of Emmys along the way.
