It’s good for diner owners to consider their community’s primary mode of transportation. Stars Hollow has a good mix of residents who enjoy walking, driving, and using public transportation. But when it comes to Luke’s, a number of patrons will just walk right over while they’re milling about town. The diner’s corner location is cozy, yet prominent. There’s not much danger of it being overlooked, but it isn’t loud or obtrusive, either. The exterior of the place generally matches that of its owner.
Maintains Stars Hollow Legacy
Luke Danes’ father is not a central focus of Gilmore Girls. However, Luke occasionally brings him up, like when he tells Lorelai about a memory of his dad at the hardware store. Though he’s quiet about it, Luke runs his diner in the spirit of Williams Hardware. That’s the name fans notice on the building, and it’s also printed on the door to Luke’s upstairs apartment, which used to be the hardware store office. Old tools even get some wall space downstairs. These little touches are comforting for Luke, but also for regulars at the diner who once purchased tools from Luke’s dad.
Culture Of Personal Conversations
Secondary characters are known to stir up the gossip with their coffee, and that’s not so great. At the same time, a diner must be conducive to conversation. Luke tries to accomplish this with that pesky anti-cell phone rule, but most customers genuinely want to relax and chat while they’re at the diner. Luke doesn’t get too involved with the people he serves, but he knows most of them and runs the place in a way that usually makes them all comfortable.
Dedicated Staff Members
Luke doesn’t have a large staff on hand, but he hires good people who help him keep the place buzzing. Lane is one of his best employees while she’s there, Caesar works hard behind the scenes, and even Jess understands that a job’s a job. At the end of the day, Luke is the head honcho at the place. It helps that he employs good people, though. No one can replicate the working atmosphere of Luke’s, not even Kirk with his outdoor lookalike, “Kirk’s.”
Respects The Competition
There’s no need to drag the competition in the culinary industry, and Luke seems to get that. When Lorelai is in a spat with him, she hightails it over to Weston’s instead of facing Luke at the diner. Weston’s is quaint and full of sweet treats, but its identity is different from Luke’s.

Luke can make sugary foods but isn’t most well-known for pie like Weston’s is. Luke doesn’t try to trample on the limited competition in town. He keeps it classy and respects the small community of restaurateurs.

Just as it has a welcoming exterior, the inside of Luke’s continually feels like home. The interior changes here and there throughout the series and with the revival, but people don’t hesitate to sit down and relax at Luke’s. He maintains a warm and familiar vibe with simple tables and seating, a traditional bar setup, and a reliable product. There’s a reason people visit Luke’s weekly or even daily, and Gilmore Girls fans wish they could actually place an order.
