Ghosted Officially Canceled By FOX After 1 Season

Though it likely won’t come as much of a surprise, FOX has officially canceled its live-action paranormal comedy Ghosted after just one season. The series looked to have a great deal of promise when it was first announced, boasting a strong concept — a mashup of The X-Files and The Office — and an even better cast, with Craig Robinson and Adam Scott in lead roles, with Ally Walker, Adeel Akhtar, and Amber Stevens West filling out the supporting cast. Unfortunately, the series didn’t get off to the best start, creatively, and although the network offered a show of support by placing an order for additional episodes late last year, Ghosted eventually had to be reworked after an extended hiatus.

The effort to retool the series as more of a workplace comedy meant bringing in a guy who knows a thing or two about making such sitcoms work: Paul Lieberstein of The Office. Though the creative changes overseen by Lieberstein did bring about significant improvements to the series in terms of offering a clearer direction and more laugh-inducing moments, it seems that audiences largely forgot about the show or were past the point of caring. By the time Ghosted returned to FOX’s Sunday night lineup recently, the ratings were down significantly.

As reported by Deadline, Ghosted joins a number of live-action comedies canceled by the network as it readies for the 2018-19 fall television season and, presumably, the pending sale of 20th Century Fox’s assets to Disney. As it stands, the paranormal workplace comedy has been thrown on the ash heap of TV history along with L.A. to Vegas, The Mick, Last Man on Earth, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine — though that series has since been saved by NBC. To add insult to injury, FOX is reportedly pulling Ghosted from its current Sunday night time slot, leaving the fate of the series’ final three episodes up in the air. With any luck FOX will either burn those episodes off on some night of the week or, more likely, they’ll be made available to stream on Hulu.

Ghosted Officially Canceled By FOX After 1 Season

The news of Ghosted’s cancelation probably isn’t a shock to anyone, especially considering West is already co-starring in the upcoming CBS comedy Happy Together, opposite Damon Wayans Jr. Meanwhile, Scott will be seen in season 2 of HBO’s former limited series Big Little Lies, and Robinson will be providing his voice in the Robert Downey Jr.-led The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.
