Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Needs A Classic Villain’s Return To Fix A 40-Year Issue

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Needs A Classic Villain’s Return To Fix A 40-Year Issue

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is introducing a new villain to the franchise, but it needs a classic villain to come back to fix an ongoing issue. 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife successfully revitalized the dormant Ghostbusters franchise after receiving great reviews and performing well at the box office. That meant that the sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife‘s post-credits scene setup could happen. The next installment, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, brings back the core cast from the most recent film as they encounter a new, mysterious evil force known as the Death Chill.

The introduction of the Death Chill in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire makes it the main threat that the Spengler family and Gary Gooberman will attempt to defeat. They’ll be aided by some of the original Ghostbusters stars, and the trailers indicate that they know about the mythology attached to the new threat. The sequel should provide any and all necessary information to get viewers caught up with the characters in terms of realizing the nature of this new villain. How Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s original villain connects to the wider franchise history is unknown, but the movie should bring back an iconic villain as part of the story.

Gozer Deserves A Bigger Role In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire After Olivia Wilde Cameo

Blended image of Phoebe Spengler holding onto a weapon and a villain Gozer in Ghostbusters Afterlife

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire would be smart to incorporate Gozer into its narrative somehow after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The movie delivered a surprise with the reveal that the villain of the original Ghostbusters was also the looming threat facing Summerville. This came with the unexpected cameo from Olivia Wilde, who plays Gozer in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Wilde does not get much screen time in the movie, leaving the franchise’s classic villain with a bit of a disappointing role in terms of how prominently featured it is overall. That continues the franchise’s underutilization of her dating back to 1984.

Even though Gozer has been featured in two Ghostbusters movies, they both use the villain sparingly and hold back from diving too deep into its story. In the original Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Gozer does not physically appear and face the main heroes until the very end. This leaves much of the powerful entity’s backstory, motivations, and characterizations unexplored in any significant way. Ghostbusters: Afterlife might have teased that Gozer won’t return until 2134, but Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire could still find a way to incorporate Olivia Wilde’s villain in a larger capacity through Death Chill.

Gozer’s Return In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Helps The Franchise Mythology

One easy way that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire could utilize Gozer in a greater way and help grow the franchise’s mythology is by connecting Gozer and Death Chill. Since the Death Chill is an entirely new creation for the movie, it can connect the powerful force to the franchise’s biggest villain. This could come through reveals like the Death Chill being an extension of Gozer’s powers or that unleashing this force was ultimately Gozer’s plan and reason for wanting to invade Earth. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire would not only help expand what audiences know about Gozer but also increase its role in the overall mythology.
