George Clooney’s Ocean’s 14 Idea Sounds Too Good Not To Happen

George Clooney just revealed the latest script idea for a new movie in the Ocean’s franchise, and now the highly anticipated Ocean’s Fourteen sounds too good not to happen. Clooney stars as Danny Ocean in the heist movie franchise, which began in 2001 with Ocean’s Eleven and has since seen two sequels and a spinoff, with a possible prequel currently rumored to be in the works. It’s been over a decade since Danny and his crew’s last score, in Ocean’s Thirteen, but the possibility of another sequel is greater than ever now, with Clooney sharing the best idea on how to do it.

Shortly after the release of 2007’s Ocean Thirteen, there was talk of another sequel, but Ocean’s Fourteen never happened. Bernie Mac, who played one of Danny’s crew, Frank Catton, sadly passed away in 2008, seemingly putting a stop to any plans for a continuation. Moving on with the franchise without Mac’s character could have been complicated. With years and then decades passing, a direct follow-up to the trilogy seemed improbable, but now it looks like the conversation about Ocean’s Fourteen might start again, with a great opportunity for Danny and his collaborators to pull off one last heist.

Ocean’s 14 Would Be Like Going In Style (According To George Clooney)

This idea would be the perfect way to acknowledge the time passing

While another movie didn’t happen right after Ocean’s Thirteen, as intended, George Clooney just gave an update on Ocean’s Fourteen by sharing how the current script continues the story of Danny Ocean and his crew. He said the sequel would be like the 1979 heist movie Going in Style, starring George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg. The classic crime comedy, which was remade in 2017, is about three senior citizens finding themselves in a financial crisis and deciding to rob a bank. Unlike the Ocean’s franchise’s characters, these protagonists don’t have a background as criminals, so Ocean’s Fourteen wouldn’t necessarily be another total redo of Going in Style‘s premise.

Still, Clooney’s comment about Ocean’s Fourteen resembling Going in Style could mean many things. The 1979 comedy starts with its characters struggling financially. That situation seems probable for Danny and his associates 16 years later, given their lifestyles, causing the need for them to pull off another heist. In Going in Style, two of the three main characters die, and Ocean’s crew could similarly see further losses, in addition to Bernie Mac’s Frank Catton and the late Carl Reiner’s Saul Bloom. Clooney was also hesitant in saying the sequel would be called Ocean’s Fourteen, perhaps implying a smaller crew, as the movies’ titles represent the number of participants.

Why Ocean’s 13 Needs A Sequel

The franchise is still alive and kicking.

While Ocean’s Fourteen hasn’t happened, the franchise is still alive, and Ocean’s Thirteen could benefit from a sequel in the current environment. The original trilogy brought in a worldwide gross of over $1 billion at the box office (via The Numbers), and Ocean’s Eight, the 2018 spin-off with an all-female cast, grossed almost $300 million worldwide. There is also an Ocean’s Eleven prequel in the works starring Barbie‘s Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and it would be great for the Ocean’s franchise to have at least one more entry bringing back the original characters for another heist.
