Following the huge jump in hype after Genshin Impact’s Version 3.1 livestream, HoYoverse has now released a teaser revealing some important information on the upcoming character, Cyno. This trailer, although only under 2 minutes, shows off a lot of the character’s personality, as well as their place in the story, and the Sumeru region as a whole. While many story elements that were introduced line up perfectly with information from Genshin Impact Version 3.1 that has already been released, it’s still interesting to see it now become official, removing all speculation.
Cyno, Judicator of Secrets, is the newest 5-star Electro, Polearm-wielding character, set to release in the first half of Version 3.1. His appearance can be dated all the way back to the release of the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: Travail in September 2020, showing off the character as one of the potential allies that could be met in Genshin Impact’s Sumeru region. This means the character’s design, personality, and the way they fit into the story have been at least partially known since the beginning. Due to this, there seems to be a wealth of information to uncover from Cyno’s character teaser alone.
As players know from Genshin Impact Version 3.0, Sumeru is the region that worships the God of Wisdom, Lesser Lord Kusanali, though her current standing may be more or less neglected. Instead, researchers and scholars pursue knowledge, pushing to become completely enlightened with wisdom. However, to keep researchers in check and ensure that knowledge is never abused, the Akademiya employs a force called Matra to dispatch of those attempting to take part in risky research. Their leader is the powerful Cyno in Genshin Impact, is the General Mahamatra and sports a cold personality that seems completely focused on his job, without displaying many emotions. This fits perfectly for a character meant to be a judge and protector of knowledge and secrets.
How Will Cyno’s Introduction Change the Story In Genshin Impact?
For the Genshin Impact’s story itself, it seems that the Traveler will be teaming up with someone from the Akedimya leading to an alliance with Cyno. With the re-introduction of Scaramouche and Dottore in Genshin Impact’s Version 3.1 trailer, these adversaries could potentially be after Sumeru’s precious and forbidden wisdom. Thus, the team-up between Cyno and the Traveler could lead to direct combat with Dottore or Scaramouche. This would easily create a major tie-in between the Sumeru region and the story overall, bringing together new characters like Cyno, with old villains like the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. On top of this, being the General Mahamatra, Cyno could lead the Traveler on a series of quests investigating dangerous research, as well as shutting down illegal experiments.
While many leaks hint at this sort of story occurring, none of these events have actually been confirmed. Cyno, at this point, seems like a fascinating character, with his cool and mysterious demeanor, as well as his unique combat style. Being a feared and respected leader of the Matra, Cyno should make for an interesting companion throughout the new patch. In the meantime, while the Genshin Impact Version 3.1 release quickly approaches, Cyno’s appearance as both a major NPC and playable character becomes more and more exciting.
