Gen V Episodes 4’s Marie Blackout Scene Hides A Sinister Truth, Teases Showrunner

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Gen V episode 4!

Gen V showrunner and executive producer Michelle Fazekas teases the dark truth behind Marie Moreau’s blackout in episode 4. When Sam Riordan goes to the home of Dr. Cardosa, Marie and her friends rush there to help Sam and stop him from doing something reckless. As the conflict escalates and while she’s in the middle of a sentence, Marie blacks out. When she regains consciousness, she wakes up next to Jordan Li, raising the question of how and why Marie blacked out in the middle of the confrontation at Dr. Cardosa’s home.

While speaking with TV Insider, Fazekas hints at the sinister forces behind Marie’s blackout, and that it is part of the effort to prevent her and her friends from learning about what is really happening behind the scenes at Godolkin University. This aligns with the Gen V episode 5 trailer clarifying that the blackout didn’t just affect Marie, and that they all blacked out as well. Read Fazekas’ comments below:

If you notice within the school, there’s surveillance, and you’ll notice in the dorm rooms, there’s metal grates and all these glass doors that are just sort of in the background, probably built in the ’60s, and we don’t really reference them that much, but it’s like, ‘Well, what’s that about?’

Part of it is, ‘What is a superhero version of having a blackout drunk night?’ And as soon as Golden Boy dies in the pilot, it sets off this mystery, and it’s like that’s the first sort of layer of the onion that we’re peeling back. As they get closer to the truth, whoever is trying to hide the truth is going to try and stop them and go to greater and greater lengths to stop them.

I think the audience will know this isn’t just, they got s**t-faced and don’t remember. Someone is trying to stop them from figuring out the truth.

How The Blackout Will Impact Gen V’s Story

Gen V episode 5 will explore the aftermath of the Marie’s episode 4 blackout, with Marie and her friends trying to figure out what happened to them after confronting Sam that night at Dr. Cardosa’s home. They will not settle for believing that it was a regular drunken blackout, and will continue searching for the truth related to the Woods, Sam, and Golden Boy’s death. The fact that they all blacked out speaks to the strength of their adversary, as they were able to do this to Godolkin University’s most talented and tenacious superheroes.

As for who their adversary is, the most obvious answer would be Dean Shetty with help from Dr. Cardosa. Dean Shetty is shown to be in charge of the Woods and has already gone to great lengths to cover up what is happening, including the act of blackmailing Tek Knight. She carried out this blackmail through video footage captured by the surveillance that Fazekas mentioned in her comments. Andre Anderson’s father Polarity may also be involved. He confirmed to Andre that he knew about the Woods and told his son to drop his investigation.

Both Dean Shetty and Polarity want to keep the young Supes from learning the truth, but they still need them and their powers for the future of Godolkin University and Vought, which is why they would resort to having them black out instead of outright kidnapping or killing them. Fazekas’ comments show that every detail of Godolkin University is used to watch and control the Supes, and once Marie and her friends learn that, it will only make them more eager to learn the full truth and fight back as Gen V continues.
