Actress Sophie Turner ponders whether Sansa Stark is headed down a dark path in Game of Thrones season 7. The hit HBO fantasy/drama series will return with new episodes on July 16, after last season left fans with Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) crowned as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) crowned as the King in the North, and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) sailing to Westeros with her new allies and dragons.
One character that has sparked the interest of viewers is Sansa Stark, who has undergone a dramatic transformation from a sweet and naïve little girl to a power player in the game of thrones. Last season, in the penultimate episode ‘Battle of the Bastards’, Sansa saved the day by enlisting the help of the Knights of the Vale to aid Jon during his battle with Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and later exacted revenge on her abusive husband by feeding him to his own hounds.
Now in a new interview with Time, Sophie Turner reveals all about her character in the upcoming season, the thrill she felt about her characters first kill and what it has been like playing a character that has evolved as much as Sansa during the past six years. Here is what Turner said about what’s next for her character, now that Sansa has some power, and if she is is going to get caught up in revenge:
“I do wonder if it’d be kind of impossible for this world and all of these people who she’s surrounded herself with, of course that would rub off on her. And she’d be learning things from them and since the age of 13 she hasn’t been with her family and had those Stark morals reiterated to her on a daily basis. She’s had to do that herself and over this period of five years she’s been away from her family, she will have one way or another been swept up in this world of betrayal and revenge. I do wonder if she’ll falter a little. She’s spent so long trying to survive and see her family again — it’s the only thing that’s kept her going and motivated, when so many times, she could have given up. So I think she may change a little, but at the end of the day, I think her heart is still good. The way she deals with her problems and her enemies may be different from how she would have dealt with them in the day when she was 13 or so.”
It’s good to know that Sansa will not be turning a Cersei or a Ramsay anytime soon, but the character will most likely face some hardships and tough decisions during the new season with Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) seemingly glued to her side. We also known that Sansa will be dealing with some jealousy of her half-brother Jon this season, but with Turner revealing that Sansa’s “heart is still good”, hopefully this tension with Jon will work itself out when the war against the White Walkers comes to a head.
Game of Thrones will return on HBO on July 16 @9pm.
