Game Of Thrones Showrunners Hint At “Basic Roadmap” For Scrapped Star Wars Trilogy

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently gave some hints as to just how much progress they made on their scrapped Star Wars trilogy. Benioff and Weiss are most known for their work adapting books into television, with their most prominent projects being Game of Thrones and 3 Body Problem. Despite their history of adaptations, though, the duo was once confirmed to be developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies. The plans for the trilogy were canceled in 2019, though, despite their progress on the project.

According to the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (via ComicBook), Weiss said he and Benioff had nearly completed the story for their first movie, and had developed a plan for the other two movies in the trilogy.

“I think we got relatively far, story-wise, with the first one. We like had a basic roadmap to the other two, and it was a shame. The truth is our Hollywood ratio, or batting average of things conceived to things actually finished has never been tremendously high, and there’s always going to be ones that get away for various reasons, you know. The ones that were never meant to be. And it was sad that was one of them for us. But as time goes on, you just kind of need to let go of those kinds of things, because if you don’t you’ll drive yourself completely crazy.”

Benioff and Weiss clearly still regret missing the opportunity to work on Star Wars, and for good reason. Their history with adaptations meant they could have drawn from Star Wars Legends stories for their trilogy like no other creator has in the franchise so far. The duo’s trilogy also could have been incredibly unique, given their penchant for changing aspects of their adaptations. There was a lot of potential for Benioff and Weiss’ Star Wars trilogy, but it will now likely never be finished.

Why Benioff & Weiss Aren’t Telling Any Details About Their Story

James Mangold and the Prime Jedi.

While Benioff and Weiss won’t give many details about their Star Wars story, there is a bit known about what they had planned. Their trilogy would have followed the first Jedi, and it’s likely that this idea was similar to James Mangold’s upcoming Star Wars movie, Dawn of the Jedi. In the past, Lucasfilm has reused aspects of scrapped stories, so parts of the canceled trilogy could make their way into Dawn of the Jedi. If that’s the case, Benioff and Weiss could be forbidden by contract from discussing what they had planned, as Lucasfilm would still be invested in keeping it secret.

Even though they’re not involved with the franchise anymore, Benioff and Weiss will likely still have a huge effect on the future of Star Wars. Their original plans may never be fully revealed, but since Lucasfilm will likely incorporate them in new ways, their legacy will at least survive. Dawn of the Jedi could even be better than their original plans, as it will benefit from the groundwork Benioff and Weiss did while developing their trilogy. Benioff and Weiss’ limited involvement in Star Wars will likely be good for the franchise, however their work pops up next.
