Fans of Game of Thrones originally thought they were witnessing the birth of a dream team when Daenerys and Tyrion joined forces in season 5. The Queen of Meereen possessed a wealth of power, including the only known dragons in existence. Meanwhile, Tyrion’s political savvy and impressive intellect seemed like the perfect addition to Daenerys’ council, helping her bring peace to Slaver’s Bay and guiding her path to the Iron Throne.
Cracks in Tyrion and Dany’s alliance soon began to show after the duo arrived on Dragonstone. The Targaryen queen’s war against Cersei and House Lannister exacted a toll on her friendship with Tyrion. In the end, the two did some pretty awful things to each other.
Worst Thing Tyrion Did: He Gave Her Bad Advice That Almost Lost The War
Tyrion showed little of his typical wit and skill while serving as Queen Daenerys’ Hand. From the beginning of her conquest of Westeros, he gave her bad advice that cost her valuable allies, such as Dorne and Highgarden, and needlessly stalled her war against Cersei.
“The Bells” proved that Daenerys could have easily forced King’s Landing to surrender with a single dragon and her armies of Dothraki and Unsullied. Had she ignored Tyrion’s suggestion to siege the city instead, the Dragon Queen could have immediately claimed the Iron Throne.
Worst Thing Daenerys Did: Killed Jaime And Cersei
Tyrion’s relationship with his siblings — particularly Cersei — was tumultuous at best. Yet he is still devastated by their deaths, as evidenced by his wrenching reaction at the discovery of their bodies in the Red Keep’s ruins.
Jaime was the only person who treated Tyrion kindly throughout his childhood at Casterly Rock. Despite his tenuous alliance with Daenerys, the last Lannister could never truly forgive his queen for murdering his family members.
Worst Thing Tyrion Did: Trusted Cersei During The Truce
One of Tyrion’s worst decisions as Hand to Queen Daenerys was his ill-thought truce with rival monarch, Queen Cersei. Despite Cersei’s long history of scheming, Tyrion convinces Daenerys to seek a truce before the Night King’s invasion, leading to the first gathering at the Dragonpit.
To make matters worse, Tyrion believes Cersei when she swears to send her armies north to fight with the Starks and Targaryens. This proves to be another dire oversight on Tyrion’s behalf that allows the Lannister queen to regather her strength for the war against Daenerys.
Worst Thing Daenerys Did: Went To War Against His Family
From season 7 onward, Daenerys leads her long-awaited conquest of the Seven Kingdoms against rival Queen Cersei. This includes attacking the Lannisters’ ancestral seat of Casterly Rock with the Unsullied, as well as burning countless Lannister soldiers alive during her ambush with the Dothraki.
Tyrion is visibly dismayed by the fiery carnage in season 7’s “The Spoils of War.” The lost Lannister is disturbed at Daenerys’ victory over his house, having underestimated her hatred towards his family.
Worst Thing Tyrion Did: Freed Jaime And Orchestrated Cersei’s Escape From King’s Landing
Tyrion’s secret loyalty to his family hindered Daenerys’ conquest and almost cost her victory over Cersei. Prior to the Battle of King’s Landing in “The Bells,” Tyrion tricks the Unsullied guards and frees Jaime from the Targaryen’s queen captivity before orchestrating his siblings’ escape from the city.
Tyrion’s actions are for naught, as Jaime and Cersei perish during Daenerys’ attack on the Red Keep. Nevertheless, he is arrested for his betrayal in the aftermath of the dragon’s destruction.
Worst Thing Daenerys Did: Ignored His Surrender Plans And Burnt King’s Landing
Daenerys could have had it all. Despite the loss of two of her dragons, the Khaleesi easily burnt the Iron Fleet and took King’s Landing with Drogon and her surviving armies. Tyrion arranges for the city’s surrender, but a rage-filled Daenerys ignores the bells and incinerates the Capitol of Westeros.
The Mother of Dragons ignored Tyrion’s advice at the worst possible moment. Sadly, the people of King’s Landing paid the price, burning in the fiery clash of queens.
Worst Thing Tyrion Did: Told Varys About Jon’s Parentage
Tyrion betrays his queen by telling Varys the truth about Jon Snow’s parentage. Deeming her an unfit monarch, the Spider throws his support behind the former King in the North. Varys prepares to declare Jon as Aegon Targaryen to the Westerosi lords and tries to poison Daenerys before his schemes are revealed.
An experienced political player like Tyrion should have recognized the disaster that Jon’s parentage posed for Daenerys. Tyrion contributed to his queen’s downfall by spreading information that threatened her claim to the Iron Throne.
Worst Thing Daenerys Did: Arrested Him For Treason
Before she is assassinated by Jon Snow, Daenerys follows her attack on King’s Landing by declaring further war on the rest of the world. Her first act is to arrest Tyrion for his betrayal, leading to another incarceration in the cells of King’s Landing for the former Hand.
It can be assumed that Tyrion would have been executed by Daenerys eventually. Like Varys, the last Lannister could have met a fiery fate at Drogon’s jaws for trying to spare his family from their deaths.
Worst Thing Tyrion Did: Convinced Jon Snow To Kill Her
Ultimately, it is Tyrion who causes Daenerys’ death when he convinces Jon Snow to kill her. Tyrion highlights the Khaleesi’s bloody history and urges Jon to take action, sparing the rest of the world — and the Starks — from more destruction.
Tyrion’s way with words is enough to persuade Jon to turn on his aunt/lover/queen. During an intimate embrace, Jon stabs Daenerys through the heart before her body is carried away by Drogon, putting an end to the Targaryen dynasty once and for all.
Worst Thing Daenerys Did: Executed His Best Friend
Not only did Daenerys kill Tyrion’s siblings, but she also executed his best friend, Varys. Tyrion reveals Varys’ treachery to the grieving queen during “The Bells.” Varys is taken to the shores of Dragonstone where he is sentenced to death before being burned alive by Drogon.
The Targaryen queen killed many of Tyrion’s loved ones during her conquest of Westeros. Although her pairing with Tyrion in season 5 initially seemed like a match made in heaven, the awful things Tyrion and Daenerys did to each other proved that their alliance in Game Of Thrones wasn’t such a good idea after all.
