Galaxy Z Flip 3 Leak: Has Samsung Fixed The Annoying Small Screen?

Galaxy Z Flip 3 Leak: Has Samsung Fixed The Annoying Small Screen?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 has been fully revealed in a series of leaked renders, showcasing a vastly improved design compared to last year’s model. It’s sleeker, more refined, and has a big upgrade over the original Z Flip’s tiny cover display.

When Samsung launched the original Z Flip in February 2020, it stood out as the first vertical-flipping smartphone in the U.S. Unlike the Z Fold that opens up to reveal a large tablet display on its inside, the Z Flip is a regular-looking Android phone that folds into itself — much like flip-phones of the early 2000s. While it doesn’t add extra functionality compared to ‘normal’ smartphones, it does make the Z Flip much more portable and easy to store in a pocket. The Z Flip wasn’t perfect (nor was the Z Flip 5G that launched a few months later), but it’s remained one of the most fascinating gadgets from Samsung in recent years.

Samsung is widely expected to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 3 later this year as its next vertical-folding phone, and thanks to a leak from GizNet, the phone’s design has been fully revealed. While the form factor is nearly identical, there are multiple tweaks that should result in a better overall device. For starters, the Z Flip 3 now features a two-tone color scheme on its backside — including a black section near the top and the rest featuring whichever color someone chooses. It’s not unlike the two-tone colors Samsung’s reportedly using for the Galaxy Buds 2, suggesting the company is looking to be more adventurous with its styling in 2021. Also present in these renders is a dual-camera setup, an LED flash, and likely an in-screen selfie camera. It’s also reported the Z Flip 3 will get a larger battery than its predecessors, in addition to a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor.

Samsung Made The Z Flip 3’s Screen Much Bigger

As promising as all of that is, it’s not even the most exciting thing revealed in this leak. One of the most annoying issues with the Z Flip and Z Flip 5G is the outer cover display. It’s supposed to be used for viewing notifications, framing selfies, and answering phone calls, but the 1.1-inch size is so minuscule that it’s best left untouched. On the Z Flip 3, Samsung is reportedly increasing the cover screen to 1.9-inches. While that’s still quite a bit smaller than the 2.7-inch cover display on the Motorola Razr 5G, it should allow the Z Flip 3 to be much more usable when it’s closed. The renders reveal the cover display showing the time, date, battery percentage, and music playback controls.

All-in-all, these renders of the Z Flip 3 look excellent. It has the same form factor that made the original Z Flip so popular, the two-tone colors look fantastic, and the larger cover display should be a huge practical upgrade. Samsung is expected to announce the Z Flip 3 in July or August, and if it looks anything like this, it’s bound to be an instant hit.
