G.I Joe Spinoff Snake Eyes Casts The Baroness

Paramount and Hasbro’s Snake Eyes movie has added another G.I. Joe character to the mix, with Úrsula Corberó cast as The Baroness. It has been six years since a G.I. Joe movie hit theaters, but it has not been for lack of trying. Paramount has tried to get G.I. Joe 3 off the ground with Dwayne Johnson but has had no luck, leading them to develop a few brand new takes on the property. A Snake Eyes solo movie starring Crazy Rich Asians‘ Henry Golding is up next in late 2020.

The movie, directed by Robert Schwentke, will explore the origin of one of the fan-favorite members of the Joes. While fans of the property are not expecting some other core Joe characters to appear, Snake Eyes has continued casting some recognizable roles. Andrew Koji has been cast as Storm Shadow (Snake Eyes’ half-brother and arch-enemy), while Iko Uwais recently joined as Hard Master (the man who trains both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow).

According to a new report from The Wrap, The Baroness is now going to be part of the Snake Eyes film too. They’ve shared that Úrsula Corberó has signed on to play the part. Corberó has recently found her breakout role with Netflix’s Money Heist series, but has also appeared in a variety of primarily Spanish-speaking shows before this. She’ll be the second actress to play The Baroness in live-action, as Sienna Miller previously played the character in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

G.I Joe Spinoff Snake Eyes Casts The Baroness

Anastasia Cisarovna aka Baroness is one of the original characters of the G.I. Joe property, debuting in the pages of the first issue of Marvel Comics’ G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero in 1982. She is a femme fatale-type character who is aligned with Cobra, the evil organization that often serves as the primary antagonist for the Joes. She is the head of Cobra’s intelligence operation and is romantically involved with Destro.

Since The Baroness does not have deep ties to Snake Eyes’ origin, it will be fascinating to see how she fits into the movie. Her presence could be used to set up Cobra for this film and potentially beyond, as Paramount and Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures want to create a brand-new G.I. Joe universe. Snake Eyes is first up in these plans, but they are also developing a new ensemble film. It is possible that Snake Eyes could crossover into that movie, possibly as he could have an established history with Baroness, and maybe even Cobra as an organization. However it plays out, the cast of Snake Eyes now has one more piece of world-building at its disposal.
