FX’s limited historical drama series Shōgun is set to bring feudal Japan to life, and Screen Rant is here with a BTS first look clip to show how it was done. The historical drama series is an adaptation of James Clavell’s novel of the same name, which was released in 1975. It was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the latter of which is known for his work writing films like Top Gun: Maverick and 2016’s The Jungle Book.
Screen Rant is excited to debut a BTS first look clip detailing the story and creation of Shōgun. It features Kondo, Marks, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Anna Sawai, and more speaking on the grand scope and ambition of the show as well as the emotional stakes at play. More About Shōgun
The Shōgun trailer sheds light on the conflicts at the heart of the show and introduces some of the characters through whose eyes audiences will get a glimpse of Japan in the year 1600. The story is loosely based on the story of real-life English navigator William Adams, who was the first Englishman to visit Japan. In the show, the character inspired by Adams is John Blackthorne, who is played by Cosmo Jarvis (Peaky Blinders). In the fictional show, Blackthorne’s entry in Japan happens to come at a time when local leader Yoshii Toranaga, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, is fighting for his life against political enemies on the Council of Regents.
The above video also demonstrates the care the filmmakers took to realize the world of feudal Japan. The sets, locations, and costumes are stunning, and highlight the struggles of Toranaga even as they paint a picture of the land that Blackthorne is experiencing for the first time. It won’t be long before audiences can see how Shōgun holds up against the best historical TV shows.
