FX Nabs TV Rights For Spider-Man: Homecoming, Logan & More

FX has acquired the TV rights to some of the summer’s hottest blockbusters. These new releases will add to the the network’s already impressive library of films. FX is also the home of award winning television programs including LegionThe AmericansAtlantaFargo, and American Crime Story.

Anyone who has watched a movie on FX will remember the catchy, “FX has the movies” promo. They aren’t lying, the company has an extensive library which included features from their sister company 20th Century Fox as well as films from Universal, Sony, DreamWorks, and Marvel (from before they made their deal with Netflix and announced their own streaming service). They even have their own channel, FXM, created exclusively for much of this film content, although they do also re-air some original programming.

According to Deadline, FX is adding 17 new films from 2017 to their collection. Among these are Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Logan, Despicable Me 3, The Fate of the Furious, Get Out, Baby Driver, Atomic Blonde, The Dark Tower, War for the Planet of the Apes, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Alien: Covenant, Boss Baby, The Emoji Movie, The Mummy, Snatched, and Girls Trip – which is the first comedy of the year to make over $100 million at the box office. In fact, many of these films were the highest grossing of the year. Most notably missing from the list are Wonder Woman which has a separate deal with Warner Bro. and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

FX Nabs TV Rights For Spider-Man: Homecoming, Logan & More

With such a wide selection of popular movies across different genres, channels like FX will make cord cutters think twice before leaving TV completely. As streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu gain users and popularity, more traditional networks are looking for any way they can to stand out. And even the streaming sites can’t keep up as corporations like Disney and Apple look to get in on the action by creating a place for their own content that viewers must pay to watch.

More ways to watch media means more content, especially in the age of Peak TV, but it also means more money. Viewers have to subscribe to each service separately if they want to truly be active around the office water cooler talking about the latest hit on Netflix, the newest episode of Game of Thrones on HBO, and the critically acclaimed new drama on Hulu. This can be expensive and overwhelming for the more casual pop culture fans.

The ease of being able to turn on your TV and watch the past summer’s blockbusters in the comfort of your living room is extremely appealing. Add to that FX’s already strong programing and you have an ideal situation. With these new acquisitions, FX is staying in the game while giving fans exactly what they want.
