Frozen 2 Will Give Every Character Their Own Song (Including Kristoff)

Disney has unveiled the official soundtrack for Frozen 2, confirming that each of the four main characters (Kristoff included) gets their own song. The original Frozen owes a good deal of its success to the Oscar-winning songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, especially Elsa’s now-iconic power ballad, “Let It Go”.

Anderson-Lopez and her husband returned to write the songs for Frozen 2, which includes a shiny new solo number for Elsa titled “Into the Unknown”. The tune kicks off when Elsa hears a mysterious voice in her head, beckoning her to leave Arendelle and ultimately sending her on an adventure to find the Enchanted Forest, which lies far north of her kingdom and was isolated from the rest of the world by a magical fire, thirty years ago.

Speaking at the early Frozen 2 press day at Walt Disney Animation Studios, directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee confirmed that “Into the Unknown” is one of seven new songs featured in the film. They went on to add that Elsa has two songs total and that all of the songs are “very powerful songs in the sense of they’re not just driving the story forward”. Buck also revealed that Kristoff is getting his own solo number this time around. You can read on for the official soundtrack details, but be warned: they appear to contain mild spoilers.

According to the newly-released Frozen 2 soundtrack listing, the film’s brand-new songs include “All is Found”, which is performed by Evan Rachel Wood as Elsa and Anna’s mother, Queen Iduna. Wood also sings a duet with Elsa voice actor Idina Menzel in the form of “Show Yourself” (suggesting that Iduna is still alive in the film’s present-day, as fans have theorized), to go along with Menzel’s performance of “Into the Unknown” (which features the Norwegian singer AURORA). In addition, Menzel will join forces with Kristen Bell (Anna), Josh Gad (Olaf), and Jonathan Groff (Kristoff) to sing “Some Things Never Change”. Finally, Bell, Gad, and Groff will all get their own individual numbers in the shapes of “The Next Best Thing”, “When I Am Older”, and “Lost in the Woods”, respectively.

Of the four main characters in Frozen, Kristoff was the only one who didn’t get a real musical number. The character did sing a short tune called “Reindeer(s) Are Better Than People”, but it was more of a throwaway joke than anything important to the story. This was all the more surprising since Groff has a long and decorated history in musical theater, having starred in the Broadway musicals Spring Awakening and Hamilton (though non-theater fans may know him better for playing Jesse St. James on Glee and FBI agent Holden Ford on Mindhunter). Fortunately, Frozen 2 will rectify this by having Groff sing “Lost in the Woods”, in addition to an extended version of “Reindeer(s) Are Better than People” listed on the film’s soundtrack.

Lastly, Frozen 2‘s soundtrack will include three song covers from the movie’s end credits, in the forms of Panic! At The Disco’s take on “Into the Unknown”, Kacey Musgraves’ version of “All is Found”, and Weezer’s rendition of “Lost in the Woods”. It sounds pretty promising, all in all.

The Frozen 2 soundtrack is now available for digital pre-order, pre-save at Spotify and pre-add at Apple Music. It will be released in multiple formats on Friday, November 15, a week before the film hits U.S. theaters.
