Frieza Already Got His Ultimate Revenge Against Goku (& Dragon Ball Fans Totally Missed It)

Ever since losing to Goku on Planet Namek, Dragon Ball’s ultimate villain, Frieza, has been obsessed with getting revenge on the Saiyan warrior. This was made clear when the Evil Emperor invaded Planet Earth in his new Mecha Frieza form immediately following his crushing defeat, and then once more in the film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’. However, as it currently stands in Dragon Ball canon, Frieza has already gotten his ultimate revenge against Goku – and fans totally missed it.

In Dragon Ball chapter 325 by Akira Toriyama, Goku and Frieza are in the final stages of their climactic battle on Namek. At this point, Goku and the Z-Fighters effectively defeated Frieza, as they thwarted his plans to use the Dragon Balls to gain immortality, and even found a way to undo most of the damage Frieza did to the entire Namekian race. All that was left was for Goku to finish Frieza off for good, but when it became apparent that Goku’s strength surpassed Frieza’s – whose energy was dropping fast – Goku simply stopped fighting.

When Goku told Frieza that he was done, despite the fact that both warriors were still standing, Frieza was dumbfounded and insulted. It was bad enough that Goku – a Saiyan – had the gall to even challenge Frieza in combat, let alone hold his own against him. But for Goku to stop fighting because it was so obvious that he was stronger than Frieza was an insult the Evil Emperor could not stomach. While Goku would eventually deliver the seemingly killing blow a short time later, this moment is when Frieza truly lost – and what he sought vengeance for.

Frieza Defeated Goku the Same Way Goku Defeated Him, Thereby Claiming His Vengeance

Dragon Ball Super chapter 87 by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou

In Dragon Ball Super chapter 87, Goku and Vegeta are in the middle of their final battle against the seemingly unstoppable Gas and his crew of space-faring ravagers called the Heeters. Gas was magically granted a power-level that made him the strongest person in the universe, which meant Goku and Vegeta had to pull all the stops to beat him. But, before they could, Frieza arrived and killed Gas like it was nothing.

After Frieza murders Gas, he then reveals that he had been training in a time-displaced pocket dimension akin to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for ten years. During that time, Frieza was not only excluded from Gas’ wish, but he also achieved an all-new transformation: Black Frieza. When he showed Goku and Vegeta his new form, Frieza proceeded to defeat them both with a single punch while they were at their strongest. Then, when it was clear that they were beaten, Frieza simply left them to wally in their defeat.

In Frieza’s Eyes, Leaving Goku Alive is Better Revenge than Killing Him

Golden Frieza laughing at his opponent in Dragon Ball Super.

Frieza leaving Goku alive after definitively proving his superior strength by defeating him with a single blow when Goku was at his strongest is the ultimate revenge for how Goku humiliated him on Namek. Not only that, but Frieza can now relish the fact that Goku is only alive because he deemed it so, and how – if he wanted to – Goku could just as easily be killed. In many ways, this also gives Frieza the power over the Saiyan race that he lost when he decimated their world, which is just the cherry on top of his ultimate revenge.

While it seems evident that their conflict is far from over, as Goku and Vegeta are currently training to become strong enough to match Black Frieza, that upcoming battle will have nothing to do with lingering thoughts of vengeance carried over from Goku and Frieza’s first fight on Namek the way their other subsequent conflicts were, as Frieza already got his ultimate revenge against Goku – and Dragon Ball fans totally missed it.
