Free Guy Trailer Shows Ryan Reynolds’ Video Game Character Design

A new clip for Free Guy is here offering a look at the video game character design of Ryan Reynolds’ titular protagonist in the sci-fi comedy. The film first began development at 20th Century Fox with Shawn Levy set to direct and produce with Reynolds and would become one of the few films to continue work after Disney’s acquisition of the studio. Following multiple release delays due to the ongoing pandemic, the action adventure is finally nearing a theatrical release next week.

Free Guy centers on Guy, a banker living as a non-playable character in the open-world video game of Free City who learns of his existence thanks to programmer Milly, with whom he builds a bond. Upon learning that the game is about to be shut down by publisher Antwan, Guy and Milly set out to find a way to save his friends from being deleted. Alongside Reynolds, the cast for the film includes Jodie Comer as Milly, Joe Keery as fellow programmer Keys, Taika Waititi as Antwan and Lil Rel Howery as fellow NPC and bank security guard Buddy.

20th Century Studios is looking to keep anticipation high for Free Guy as the studio has unveiled a new clip for the film. The video offers more of Guy’s awkward personality as well as the first look at his actual video game design seen through the real world. Check out the new teaser below:

The trailers for the film thus far have teased an exciting recreation of the chaotic world of an open-world entry into the massively multiplayer online (MMO) genre, but have kept everyone’s appearance to looking like normal people. Given the film’s sci-fi genre connections, it could have easily have been chalked up to the most innovative game development technology ever successfully recreating a person in game. However, the new clip does confirm the game characters will be getting their own animated character designs and the results are fairly impressive.

Other films in the past have tried and failed to insert actors into fake video games for the purposes of their scenes, with Kevin Hart’s unrealistic soldier in Ride Along being one of the more egregious examples. While Free Guy may not be a perfect recreation of the gaming world, the Sims aesthetic the new clip teases for the film’s fake game certainly points to a better effort to ensure the filmmakers deliver a more authentic portrayal of its subject matter. Only time will tell whether it pulls it off when the film hits theaters next week.
