Freddy Struggles With One Aspect Of Having Powers In Shazam 2

Jack Dylan Grazer has teased Freddy Freeman’s story in Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, revealing he will struggle when learning to handle his new powers. Grazer took on the role of Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) physically disabled foster brother in David F. Sanberg’s original 2019 superhero movie. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to release in theatres on December 21st, 2022.

In the climax of 2019’s Shazam!, Billy Batson is forced to bestow the powers of his super-powered alter-ego Shazam (Zachary Levi) upon his newfound foster siblings, Freddy, Mary Bromfield (Grace Fulton), Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman), Eugene Choi (Ian Chen), and Pedro Peña (Jovan Armand) in order to stand a chance at defeating Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong) and the embodiments of the Seven Deadly Sins. After imprisoning Sivana once more in the Rock of Eternity, Freddie and his siblings keep their powers. With the newly-released Shazam 2 trailer teasing more family team-ups against dragons and villains from Ancient Greece, Grazer has opened up about the challenges that Freddy will face when coming to terms with his powers in the sequel.

During WB’s DC Comics movie panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Grazer took to the stage alongside the rest of Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ cast to promote the upcoming film, where he shared some details about Freddy’s personal journey. During the panel, the star revealed that Freddy will struggle to balance his life as an ordinary teenager with his superhero duties, mainly due to Freddy being unable to keep his powers a secret. Joking that Freddy’s attitude toward his power’s secrecy would be just like he would act, Grazer suggested that Freddy will end up showing off his powers to impress a few people in the sequel.

Previously shared set photos hinted at Freddy’s story with Rachel Zegler’s character, suggesting that the pair may share a romantic subplot in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Captured during the filming of the sequel in Atlanta, Georgia, the photographs depicted Grazer and Zegler sharing a kiss. While Zegler’s character isn’t currently officially confirmed, it is believed that she is playing a third daughter of Atlas alongside Helen Mirren and Lucy Lui’s villains Hespera and Kalypso, though it is currently unknown whether she will also be a villainous character alongside her siblings.

With Shazam! Fury of the Gods picking up on Billy and Freddy’s family following the events of the first film, the sequel promises to explore more of how Billy’s family handled gaining their own powers. Grazer previously discussed how he hoped to build upon his first performance as Freddy, and how the sequel will be a good continuation of Freddy’s character. In Shazam!, Freddy tells Billy how he wished he’d had powers when falling out with his foster brother following Billy’s irresponsible use of his abilities, and Grazer’s comments suggest that while Freddy got his wish, he may need to heed his previous advice and grow into a more responsible hero throughout the upcoming sequel.
