Francis Ford Coppola’s Groundbreaking New Sci-Fi Movie Is A 34-Year Godfather Reunion

Francis Ford Coppola will be reuniting with a Godfather actor in his upcoming sci-fi movie Megalopolis, marking their first collaboration in 34 years. Set in post-apocalyptic New York, Megalopolis follows an architect, Caesar (Adam Driver), who wants to rebuild the city as a utopia after a global disaster. Megalopolis has been a passion project of Coppola’s since the ’80s when he first started writing the screenplay, and he’s been trying to make the sci-fi epic a reality ever since.

Despite being one of the most esteemed directors of all time, Coppola was unable to secure financing for the production from any major studios. In a groundbreaking move, Coppola ended up funding the $120 million sci-fi movie himself. Filming officially wrapped in March 2023, and now, Megalopolis will finally be released in 2024 after 40 years in the works. In addition to Driver, the ensemble cast of Megalopolis is stacked with talented actors like Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Giancarlo Esposito. However, one Megalopolis actor has an especially close relationship and history with Coppola that makes her casting extra special.

Megalopolis Is The First Time Talia Shire & Coppola Have Worked Together Since Godfather 3

Megalopolis marks Coppola and Shire’s first collaboration in 34 years

One of the most notable additions to the Megalopolis cast is actress Talia Shire, who starred in Coppola’s Godfather trilogy. Shire played Connie, Michael Corleone’s sister and the only daughter of Vito and Carmela Corleone, in every Godfather movie, but hasn’t worked with Coppola since The Godfather Part III in 1990. Though Shire’s exact role in Megalopolis is unknown, it will be the actor-director duo’s first collaboration in 34 years.

Other than the Godfather trilogy, Shire also worked with Coppola on the anthology film, New York Stories, in 1989. Shire played Charlotte in the segment, “Life Without Zoë,” directed by Coppola and co-written with his daughter, Sofia Coppola, who also starred in The Godfather Part III as Mary, Michael Corleone’s daughter. Talia Shire and Francis Ford Coppola reuniting is notable because of how long it’s been since they last collaborated, but also because of their connection in real life.

How Talia Shire Is Related To Francis Ford Coppola

Shire is actually a Coppola herself

Talia Shire as Connie Corleone Rizzi in The Godfather Part III

This may be Shire and Coppola’s first time working together since The Godfather Part III in 1990, but they’ve certainly seen each other plenty over the last 34 years, since Shire is Coppola’s younger sister. Shire was actually credited as “Talia Coppola” early on in her career, but changed her last name after marrying her first husband, songwriter and composer David Shire, in 1970. Her first film credit as “Talia Shire” was, ironically, the first Godfather movie in 1972.

Talia kept the last name Shire after she and David got divorced in 1980, the same year she married her second husband, film producer Jack Schwartzman. Together they had two sons, Jason and Robert, both of whom went on to become actors as well. In fact, Jason will be starring alongside his mother in Megalopolis. Coppola’s son, Roman, who has collaborated with his cousin Jason on many Wes Anderson movies, will also be serving as second unit director on Megalopolis. Shire’s appearance alone makes Megalopolis a Godfather reunion, but like many of Coppola’s movies, it’ll also be a family affair.
