Forget Suicide Squad, DC Unleashes A New Suicide ARMY

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Flashpoint Beyond #4

In the DC Universe, the Suicide Squad is viewed as the best villain team. But in the Flashpoint Universe, the ultimate Suicide Squad has been revealed as an entire army of villains.

The Flashpoint Universe has had a bit of a roller coaster ride since its inception. It was originally created when the Flash Barry Allen went back in time to save his mother from being killed by the Reverse-Flash. This seemingly small change had a profound ripple effect that altered all of reality. Aquaman and Wonder Woman both became leaders of their respective domains and started a war against each other. Bruce Wayne’s parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, never died in Crime Alley as they should have, with Bruce dying instead. This caused Thomas to become Batman instead of his son, while Martha became the Joker.

In Flashpoint Beyond #4 by Geoff Johns, Tim Sheridan, Jeremy Adams, Xermanico, and Mike Janin, a newsreel reveals an update on what is going on with Wonder Woman. Previously, an emissary of Aquaman tried to assassinate Thomas Wayne. In response, Thomas Wayne meets with Aquaman and assassinates him, essentially causing Wonder Woman to win the war. But she doesn’t stop there. She continues to fight, which caused Director Amanda Waller to deploy her Task Force X, better known as the Suicide Squad in the main DC universe. Except instead of unleashing half a dozen villains like she normally does, Waller unleashed hundreds.

Forget Suicide Squad, DC Unleashes A New Suicide ARMY

Although this moment is never shown and is only narrated in captions coming from the radio, it’s a very significant moment for the Flashpoint Universe. It reveals that not only does the Suicide Squad exist in the Flashpoint, but that it is much, much larger. Because of the chaos that often erupts in the Flashpoint Universe compared to the main DC Universe, it’s no surprise that Amanda Waller has been able to accumulate as much power as she has. Given how much Waller uses the Suicide Squad for her own ends in the main DC Universe, readers can only wonder what she would be able to do with an entire army at her disposal.

Another interesting detail about this new Suicide Squad/Army is that they aren’t controlled the usual way. Amanda Waller is known for putting explosive devices in the villains’ heads that will explode if they don’t comply. In the Flashpoint Universe, she uses Son of Saturn to psychically control the villains’ minds. Although it depends on Son of Saturn‘s power level, it is still far more effective as it limits the amount of free will and control these villains have over their own actions. Still, regardless of her methods, it is still wildly impressive that Amanda Waller in the Flashpoint Universe has formed a whole Suicide Army instead of a standard Suicide Squad.
