For All Mankind Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: Ed’s Future & 5 Other Major Reveals

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for For All Mankind, season 4, episode 5, “Goldilocks”.

The future of Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) looks uncertain as the truth about the fate of Danny Stevens (Casey W. Johnson) is revealed in For All Mankind season 4, episode 5, “Goldilocks.” As NASA director Eli Hobson (Daniel Stern) tries to keep the fragile M-7 alliance together in the face of President Al Gore’s determination to win the next election, tensions are still frayed up on Mars following the departure of Cosmonaut Svetlana Zakharova (Masha Mashkova). Ed has been at loggerheads with Danielle Poole (Krys Marshall) since she sent Svetlana back to Earth, and the discovery of Baldwin’s health concerns only serves to make matters much worse.

As the USA and USSR drift further apart following the military coup in the Soviet Union, flashbacks reveal why the Mars-7 alliance is worth fighting for. For All Mankind season 4, episode 5, finally reveals what happened to Danny Stevens in harrowing scenes that reveal the sacrifices made for survival on Mars in the early days of Happy Valley. It’s clear that Danny’s fate is at the heart of Ed and Dani’s mutual resentment, with each former friend blaming the other for the tragedy. As Danielle Poole makes a big decision at the end of For All Mankind season 4, episode 5, it remains to be seen if she’ll live to regret it.

6 For All Mankind Confirms Danny Died On Mars

Ed and Danielle found his body.

For All Mankind Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: Ed’s Future & 5 Other Major Reveals

Since Danny’s For All Mankind season 4 exit was confirmed, it’s been clear that something tragic happened to the troubled astronaut. Danielle’s flashbacks reveal that the isolation of Danny’s solitary confinement in the North Korean spaceship became too much for him to bear. When Ed and Danielle went out to visit Danny and update him on the perilous state of their supplies, they found him dead in his spacesuit, sitting by a rock, looking out across the horizon. It’s a horrifying end for Danny, revealing that he never had the chance to redeem himself for his role in the fatal drilling accident.

It’s been clear from Ed and Dani’s clashes that they both blame each other for the tragedy, with Danielle restating her concern that Danny wasn’t ready for Mars in the previous episode. For Ed’s part, he accuses Danielle of returning to Earth and quitting NASA to run away from her guilt over Danny’s death. Cruelly suggesting that Dani exile him with nothing but a bible for lying about his health concerns, he tips his former colleague over the edge. Sick of dealing with Ed and covering for his mistakes, she fires him as her XO.

5 Dani Fires Ed Baldwin – What’s Next For Old Man Mars?

Is Ed and Danielle’s friendship salvageable?

Krys Marshall and Joel Kinnaman as Danielle Poole and Ed Baldwin

After Dani was alerted to Ed Baldwin’s health concerns, she reasonably suggested that he step back from flight duties. Ed has been struggling to stay relevant throughout For All Mankind season 4, and so he sees the removal of his flight privileges as an enforced retirement. This is despite the fact that Dani was willing to keep him as her Executive Officer. Typically, Ed flies off the handle, bringing up Danny’s death and pinning the blame of Danielle, forcing her to play hard ball. Calling Ed a bitter old man, she revokes not just his flight privileges, but his role as XO.

This effectively leaves Ed Baldwin, the so-called “old man Mars” as a civilian on the Red Planet, with no official role in Happy Valley. He’s already made it clear that he has no desire to return to Earth, and to do so now would surely be to admit that Dani was right. Ed Baldwin has never been very good at admitting when someone else is right, so it’s likely that he’ll stay on Mars. The only question is whether he lives on the Red Planet quietly, or makes life difficult for Dani and the Goldilocks mining project.

4 Miles’ Mars Rock Business Is Exposed

Ilya discovers that Miles has been lying to him.

Toby Kebbell as Miles in For All Mankind

Despite the protestations of Ilya (Dimiter D. Marinov), Miles Dale (Toby Kebbell) is forging ahead with his red obsidian export business. Having risked his life in For All Mankind season 4, episode 4 to acquire Mars rocks, it’s revealed that Miles has been sending them back to Earth. Miles knows that he’s betrayed Ilya’s trust, which is why he’s so skittish about closing the video message from his wife and kids in the new home they’ve been able to afford. Now that Ilya has seen the newspaper advert for Martian jewelry, it’s surely only a matter of time before his partnership with Miles crumbles.

3 Dev Cuts All Ties Before Moving To Mars

The Helios founder doesn’t intend to return to Earth.

Edi Gathegi as Dev Ayesa in For All Mankind season 3 episode 3

After the discovery of the iridium-rich Goldilocks asteroid, Dev Ayasa (Edi Gathegi) begins making plans to travel to Mars. Visiting his mother, Dev cruelly cuts all ties with her, blaming her for what happened to his father after his dreams of space were dashed. He states that he’s moving to Mars to make a better world, rather than fix the problems of Earth. It’s clear that Dev is running away from his own difficult childhood, especially given his emotional reaction to Kelly Baldwin (Cynthy Wu) and her loyalty to her son Alex. As always, Dev isn’t moving to Mars to improve humantiy, he’s doing it to avenge some perceived slight against his late father.

2 Kelly Agrees To Join The Mars Mission With Her Son

Mars baby Alex will be better off on the Red Planet.

Kelly holds her infant son in For All Mankind

Kelly decides to join Dev on Mars so that she can oversee the search for life to which she’s dedicated her entire career. After initially considering leaving her son behind, Kelly decides to take Alex with her. As Kelly’s son was born in space, NASA believe that the health issues he experiences on Earth could be alleviated by the atmospheric conditions of Mars. Kelly and Alex’s arrival on Mars couldn’t be better timed for Ed, now that he’s been fired by Danielle. However, it doesn’t seem like Ed Baldwin is completely ready to sit back and play doting grandfather, suggesting potential familial conflict on the horizon.

1 Aleida Is Going To The Soviet Union – Will She Meet Margo?

Aleida is Helios’ representative at the M-7 summit.

For All Mankind Aleida in Margo's Office(1)

A crisis summit is called when President Al Gore and President Fyodor Korzhenko (Dimitar Bakalov) try to score political points against each other over how the Goldilocks asteroid’s minerals will be shared. The summit is an attempt to avert restarting the Cold War in For All Mankind‘s season 4 timeline, and Aleida Rosales (Coral Peña) will represent Helios at the talks taking place in Leningrad. The emergency M-7 summit will surely bring Roscosmos’ newest recruit, Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) dangerously close to her protégé.

Given that the USA believe Margo Madison died in the JSC bombing, it’s likely that Irina Morozova (Svetlana Efremova) will keep Margo out of sight. However, the fact remains that Roscosmos will need Margo’s expertise in planning the joint mission to mine Goldilocks for iridium. Aleida’s trip to the Soviet Union will be nerve wracking enough, as she settles into her new role as “power broker“, bumping into Margo could derail her recovery as For All Mankind season 4 continues.
