Florence Pugh Has An Incredible Rotten Tomatoes Streak – Will Dune 2 Break It?

Florence Pugh has achieved a remarkable Rotten Tomatoes streak through 2023, and it will be interesting to see how Dune: Part Two will affect the trend. The English actress has been working in the industry for nearly a decade, but she rose to prominence in 2019 after starring in three notable movies: Fighting with My Family, Midsommar, and Little Women. Her stardom grew shortly after she was cast as Yelena Belova in the MCU, having portrayed the character in 2021’s Black Widow and the Hawkeye series later that year. From there, Pugh continued to acquire extremely noteworthy roles.

Even though appearing in the MCU is a big deal, Pugh has more recent roles worth discussing. 2022 saw the actress star alongside Harry Styles in the mind-bending thriller Don’t Worry Darling. She also closed out the year voicing Goldilocks in the very well-received Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, with buzz carrying into 2023. After leading A Good Person, Pugh starred as Jean Tatlock in Oppenheimer, working primarily alongside Cillian Murphy’s titular character. The movie, along with her last 2023 project, The Boy and the Heron, ended up extending Pugh’s incredible Rotten Tomatoes streak.

Through 2023, Florence Pugh has only had four movies considered “Rotten” (via Rotten Tomatoes), including A Good Person, Don’t Worry Darling, Malevolent, and The Commuter. That said, two of those movies–A Good Person and Don’t Worry Darling–received high audience scores, implying that Pugh has only had two movies that would be considered bad by both critics and viewers alike. A Good Person scored 96% with audiences against 58% among critics, with the consensus from both pointing to great performances for Pugh and a cast highlighted by Morgan Freeman and Molly Shannon.

Don’t Worry Darling, on the other hand, is Pugh’s lowest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 38% with critics. Granted, Pugh was a highlight in the movie by Olivia Wilde, ultimately helping to elevate its audience score to 74%. As for the two films that critics and audiences agreed didn’t work for various reasons, Malevolent, the horror movie from 2018, was Pugh’s low point in viewers’ minds, considering the 16% audience score. Then there was The Commuter, the other movie from 2018 that didn’t work for most viewers. Since those projects released, every single one of Pugh’s projects, including shows The Little Drummer Girl and Hawkeye, have been a hit with viewers.

Timothee Chalamet and Florence Pugh as Paul and Irulan in Dune 2

While the exact ranking of Florence Pugh’s best movies might remain a discussion, the main question will now be whether Dune: Part Two will continue the star’s Rotten Tomatoes streak. Considering the 2021 movie acquired a “Certified Fresh” 83% from critics and an even higher audience score, chances are good that Pugh’s streak will carry through 2024. Pugh is set to portray Princess Irulan in the Dune sequel, joining an already stacked cast in one of 2024’s most-anticipated movies.

While Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya starred in 2021’s Dune, a lot of the attention will be on the newcomers, specifically Pugh and Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Based on the Dune lore, Princess Irulan will become a key figure in Paul Atreides’ life, which is a good sign for those hoping to see a lot of Pugh in the upcoming sequel and beyond. Based on the Dune: Part Two’s trailers and teases, the sequel is shaping up to be the best franchise installment yet, which is excellent news for Florence Pugh and her streak.
