Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Flash #2!The latest cosmic horror encountered by the Flash is making his swiftest nemesis, the Reverse-Flash, look downright slow by comparison. Wally West has just discovered a horrific monster lurking in the hidden layers of reality. This dangerous being’s powers go above and beyond what the Scarlet Speedster’s rival is capable of.
The Flash has recently begun experiencing ‘glitches’ in reality after a bout with Mirror Master. Now Wally can perceive unseen, nightmarish realities hidden around him. At the same time, Wally noticed that the Speed Force seemed to be suffering from some unknown being known as the Uncoiled.
To make matters worse, Gorilla Grodd began attacking Flash’s city, conducting unknown experiments. Grodd’s latest experiment used a new speedster known as the ‘Indigo Streak’ to open up a portal into the Speed Force. A horrifying slug-like monster with spikes emerged from the portal and Flash finally discovered the Uncoiled, the monster causing the Speed Force pains.
Even the Reverse-Flash Couldn’t Keep Up with the Uncoiled
In The Flash #2 by Si Spurrier and Mike Deodato, Jr., the Uncoiled wastes no time in attacking Wally or Gorilla Grodd’s flunkies. Flash uses his aura to create a solidified ‘windshield’ to strike at the Uncoiled, but unfortunately, the monster can easily reassemble itself. The Uncoiled continues to attack as Wally realizes that the Uncoiled isn’t actually moving: It’s stepping in and out of reality “like a string of projections“, much like Flash when he experiences his glitches. Though Wally can’t handle the Uncoiled’s speed, a group of cosmic explorers called the Stillness arrive to take care of the monster.
The Flash Family has dealt with a lot of villains in the past that have used speed powers for nefarious purposes. Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash, studied the Speed Force and managed to create his own Negative Speed Force to commit his various evil acts. But the Uncoiled operates at a rate that goes beyond what Reverse-Flash or even Flash is capable of. Technically, the Uncoiled isn’t traveling at all, but rather, exiting and entering reality that makes it seem like it’s moving at incomprehensible speeds. But the Uncoiled was just one extradimensional horror. What other hidden threats are lurking in reality that dwarf the Flash’s power?
The Uncoiled Opens Up a World of Cosmic Horrors for Flash
The Uncoiled is just one frightening being Flash has fought since he developed his glitching abilities. But Flash’s glitches are getting worse and he’s seeing more nightmarish beings the longer he’s got this power. The Uncoiled already showed Flash there are ways to move faster than he’d previously thought, even if it is technically hopping around reality. What other ethereal beings are out there and how will Flash manage to beat them? With Reverse-Flash, it was usually a matter of running faster and thinking more cleverly. But for the Uncoiled and whatever else is out there, Wally is really going to need to think outside the box to defeat them. The Flash #2 is on sale now.
