Flash Finally Understands the Meaning of His Ultra-Powerful New Codename

The Flash finally has a greater understanding of the meaning of his ultra-powerful new code name. Wally West has entered a new era, and with it comes new takes on classic villains, stunning new powers as well as a new nickname: “the Cynosure.” DC has been coy about what this means, but in The Flash #6, more is revealed about the Cynosure and what it means to Wally.

The Flash #6 is written by Si Spurrier and drawn by Mike Deodato Jr. Throughout the issue, Wally encounters the Stillness, a race of mysterious beings he has recently discovered. The Stillness identifies Wally once again as “the Cynosure.” The Stillness also tells Wally he has access to something called “the Deepchange,” but he is too brutish to properly access it.

At the end of the issue, readers learn Wally is being manipulated by Reverse-Flash, who intends to take advantage of Wally’s status as the Cynosure by using it to destroy the universe.

Wally’s new role as the Cynosure is but the first of many changes that have recently come to the Scarlet Speedster since Spurrier and Deodato took over the character. Flash has discovered he is far more powerful than even he thought, having unlocked an ability to step outside of time, space and even reality itself. With these new powers comes new threats, such as the Stillness. Furthermore, existing villains such as Mirror Master and Captain Cold have received upgrades. Finally, the Stillness, realizing Wally’s sheer power, has hung the “Cynosure” nickname on him.

Now, Spurrier and Deodato have clarified what is meant by the name. A cynosure is someone who is the center of attention, and this run of The Flash has made it clear there is something special about Wally. His new powers, including the ability to access the Deepchange, are the proof. The Stillness, who rarely interfere in the affairs of lesser beings, have taken a peculiar interest in Wally West and were even the ones to give him his new nickname. These threads come together in The Flash #6, as Wally learns more about his destiny.

While Flash’s new status as the Cynosure brings with it awesome new powers, it could also spell the end of the DC Universe. The Speed Force is warp and woof with the fabric of reality, and Wally is a powerful conduit for it, something Reverse Flash is about to take advantage of and corrupt to his own ends. Having apparently received a power upgrade of his own, Reverse Flash is going to poison creation, and use Wally to do it. Flash’s understanding of his new nickname brings it with the potential for great good–and even worse evil.
