Five Years After Rise Of Skywalker, The Sequel Trilogy’s Best Idea Is Still A Mystery

Five Years After Rise Of Skywalker, The Sequel Trilogy’s Best Idea Is Still A Mystery

It’s been over 5 years since Star Wars released the final sequel, yet the franchise still refuses to elaborate on the best part of The Rise of Skywalker. Generally speaking, The Rise of Skywalker felt disconnected from the rest of the sequels. After Rian Johnson’s shocking decision to kill off Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker made the even more criticized decision of “somehow” bringing Palpatine back. And because recent Star Wars projects are concerned with explaining how Palpatine returned, the franchise has neglected to explore the better parts of the sequels.

Star Wars has paid too much attention to establishing Palpatine’s resurrection; it’s not worth exploring further. Instead, it’s time to start tying in some of the new ideas The Rise of Skywalker introduced, rather than ignore its entry in Canon altogether. To this end, Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie should confront the sequels’ mysteries. Groups like the Church of the Force and Palpatine’s Sith Eternal cultists seemed important in the sequels, yet were barely explained. Above all else, Star Wars needs to expound on one The Rise of Skywalker mystery pertaining to the Force.

The Force Dyad Is A New Key To Understanding The Force

Star Wars The Rise of Sywalker Rey and Kylo Ren Force Dyad

The Rise of Skywalker introduced the idea of a Force dyad, involving two characters being connected by fate through the Force. Rey and Kylo Ren’s dyad was established early on in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and only grew as the sequels went on. Despite being separate individuals, they could share memories and experiences with one another even if they were on other sides of the galaxy. The Force dyad is, by far, one of the most intriguing and powerful aspects of The Rise of Skywalker. And if Star Wars actually gives it more detail, it could redefine the Force.

Star Wars has retrospectively added a few more details to the Force dyad in The Rise of Skywalker’s novelization, which suggests that a Force dyad cannot form between two people on the same side. Instead, Force dyads adhere to the age-old saying that “opposites attract.” Because Rey aligned with the light side of the Force and Kylo Ren with the dark, they were able to form a dyad. It’s even possible that Kylo’s switch to the light side near the end of The Rise of Skywalker caused an imbalance in their dyad, ultimately leading to one of their deaths.

Star Wars Is Fixing Rise Of Skywalker In Canon… But Not The Dyad

Ever since The Rise of Skywalker tarnished Star Wars’ reputation in the theater, most of Disney’s Star Wars projects since then have attempted to repair the damage the sequels did. For example, The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch are trying to explain how Palpatine “somehow” returned. But by focusing on fixing the bad aspects of The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars has forgotten to praise the good parts of the film. The movie showed how the Sith Eternal had been waiting for a Force dyad to appear for generations, yet almost no other project has bothered referencing it.

According to Palpatine, the Force dyad was something “as strong as life itself.” By tapping into Rey and Kylo’s dyad for a mere second, Palpatine was able to restore much of his malformed clone’s body. And by drawing upon the rest of their life force, he was able to unleash the enormous lightning blast that disabled the Resistance’s fleet. If Rey and Kylo had had more time to develop their power, its likely they could have performed even more mind-bending feats than Palpatine’s lightning blast. Their unique Force healing abilities only scratch the surface of the dyad’s power.

Star Wars Needs To Focus On The Force Dyad Going Forward

While The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch build a foundation for Palaptine’s resurrection, it’s up to Rey’s New Jedi Order movie to give more details on the Force dyad. Adam Driver’s return as Kylo Ren seems unlikely, meaning Rey’s dyad is incomplete. Nevertheless, this gives Star Wars the chance to show how well Rey functions without her other half in the Force. Daisy Ridley’s character was meant to be the face of the sequels, yet her character arc was stifled by the war between the First Order and the Resistance.

In any case, the power the Force dyad afforded Kylo and Rey needs to be explored in future Star Wars projects. Disney set the two of them up to become the most powerful Force users in the franchise, but squandered the opportunity by killing off Kylo too quickly. Technically, Kylo’s lifeforce still resides in Rey after he revived her at the end of the sequels, meaning she may still have access to him and the dyad’s power through the Force. Either way, more Star Wars projects need to address why the Force dyad is so special to the franchise.
