Warning: Major SPOILERS lie ahead for Five Nights at Freddy’s!
Though full of nods to its main source material, co-writer/director Emma Tammi opens up about the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie featuring Sister Location Easter eggs. The horror movie largely based itself on the events of Scott Cawthon’s 2014 game, centering around the night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza as he must survive being hunted by the possessed animatronics inhabiting the restaurant. In addition to producing, Cawthon helped co-write the script for the adaptation with Tammi and Seth Cuddeback, having developed the story with Chris Lee Hill and Tyler MacIntyre.
As the movie makes its way to theaters and Peacock, SlashFilm spoke with Tammi for some insight on Five Nights at Freddy’s. When asked about the inclusions of Circus Baby and Balloon Boy, the co-writer/director acknowledged her interest in helming a more direct Sister Location adaptation, along with other movies set at other locations. See what Tammi explained below:
I am not closing the door to that at all. I would be so excited to pursue additional films in this world. So, fingers crossed. You got some Glamrock hair happening right now. You’re bringing it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That would be super fun. There’s so much to tap into.
How Five Nights At Freddy’s Sets Up Sequels
While the games slowly unraveled the larger lore across multiple installments, the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie took a more direct approach in revealing much of the wider universe within its runtime. Matthew Lillard’s Steve Raglan was confirmed to have been William Afton after early casting reports stated he would play the franchise’s iconic villain, and the appearance of Golden Freddy explained that the animatronics were possessed by the spirits of the children he murdered.
The end of Five Nights at Freddy’s saw Afton finally met with a sense of justice as the spirits remembered what he did to them and turned on the man controlling them, forcing him to be trapped in his Springtrap suit. The animatronics proceed to drag him off, with the Golden Freddy spirit watching from the doorway of the back room as he continues to struggle against the crushing gears of the suit.
In addition to Afton’s promise that he “always comes back“, the very end of Five Nights at Freddy’s credits feature the playing of a music box with a ghostly voice saying “come find me“, teasing the arrival of The Puppet from the game’s first sequel. If a movie sequel were to explore the same story threads as Sister Location, it could find Afton’s body count to be larger than the newly released adaptation indicated, and that the likes of Circus Baby will make their way to the screen, and even the concept of the animatronics possessing humans themselves.
