Fistful of Vengeance Trailer Teases Wu Assassins Movie With Lewis Tan & Iko Uwais

Fistful of Vengeance movie trailer teases a continuation of Netflix’s Wu Assassins show starring Lewis Tan and Iko Uwais. Season 1 of Wu Assassins brought supernatural martial arts action to streaming, with an international cast including Byron Mann, Li Jun Li, Celia Au, Lawrence Kao, Tommy Flanagan, Kathryn Winnick, JuJu Chan and Mark Dascascos.

Set in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the modern day, the 2019 Netflix show concerns a young chef named Kai Jin (Uwais) encountering a mystical spirit and becoming blessed with the martial arts powers of the titular Wu Assassins, using his new skills to battle five criminals who have themselves taken on supernatural abilities. Currently carrying an 83% critics score and 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Wu Assassins has been praised for its fight choreography and imaginative mixing of fantasy and martial arts, but some have complained about its story. With season 1 of the show having wrapped up after ten episodes, that perhaps disappointing story will now be continued via a movie officially titled Fistful of Vengeance, featuring returning series stars Uwais, Tan, Kao and Chan alongside new cast members Jason Tobin, Pearl Thusi, Francesca Corney, Tony Kranz and Rhatha Phongaam. The movie was directed by Wu Assassins episode helmer and action veteran Roel Reiné, who is known for films like The Scorpion King 3, The Man With the Iron Fists 2 and Hard Target 2.

Any concerns among the show’s fans that Reiné’s Fistful of Vengeance might pull back the throttle on Wu Assassins’ fantasy-tinged martial arts action should be put to bed with the new trailer just released by Netflix. See the action-packed clip in the space below:

The synopsis for Fistful of Vengeance reads, “Super-powered assassin Kai and friends Lu Xin and Tommy track a killer from San Francisco’s Chinatown to Thailand to avenge the death of a loved one.” It continues, “But their hunt soon entangles them with old enemies, a mysterious billionaire and an ancient mystical force bent on taking over the world.” The old enemy Kai, Lu Xin and Tommy become entangled with is of course Chan’s Triad villain Zan, who survived the events of Wu Assassins season 1 and was said to have fled to Macau to recruit more allies.

With The Raid‘s Uwais and Mortal Kombat‘s Tan topping the cast, Wu Assassins‘ follow-up movie is sure to satisfy on a pure action filmmaking level. It remains to be seen however if those story concerns that were raised about the original streaming show’s first season show up again. Fistful of Vengeance punches its way onto Netflix on February 17, 2022.
