The first Super Mario Bros. Movie clip has been released and brings the Mushroom Kingdom to life. The upcoming video game adaptation stars Chris Pratt as the fearless plumber, Mario. When his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) is captured by Bowser (Jack Black), the tyrannical leader of the Koopa race, Mario allies himself with iconic characters from the long-running video game franchise to take on Bowser’s army and protect the Mushroom Kingdom.
During this year’s Game Awards, Illumination shared the very first clip from The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Set to a reworked orchestral version of the Super Mario Bros. theme, the video sees Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) introduce Mario to the brightly-colored Mushroom Kingdom world, complete with imagery plucked from various video games in the long-running franchise to include floating bricks, twisting pipes, and Princess Peach’s Castle. Super Mario Bros. Movie Is Taking The Games Seriously
This clip, along with The Super Mario Bros Movie trailers, show that the adaptation is taking the original games seriously, pulling details from the wide library of releases throughout the popular franchise to bring the games to life. Music from the very first level in the original 1985 release can be heard in the clip, the overall Mushroom Kingdom design harkens back to the vibrant aesthetic of its pixelated inspiration, and the stained-glass window in Peach’s Castle is taken directly from the games. Even small in-game items, characters, and special blocks can be seen within the clip including the Super Bell powerup, a Cheep Cheep fish, and the Coin block.
Any longtime fans should be pleased with the level of care the animators put into the Super Mario Bros. film. Unfortunately, a portion of the fanbase may still struggle to get past Pratt’s Mario voice. Upon the release of the first The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s teaser, some fans were surprised to hear Pratt’s voice barely altered for the role, especially since both Toad and Bowser’s voices match that of their video game counterparts. Although the backlash was rather vocal, general audiences may be satisfied with the work the filmmakers have put into the rest of the movie.
While much of the film appears to accurately represent the games on which it’s based, Princess Peach’s role takes a significant deviation from the original games. Generally a damsel-in-distress, the film makes her a force to be reckoned with as Peach dons combat gear, wields a deadly halberd, and marches toward Bowser’s approaching forces head-on to protect her people. Unfortunately, audiences have to be patient if they want to see Mario back in action as The Super Mario Bros. Movie lands in theaters April 7, 2023.
