First Look at Odette Annable as Reign on Supergirl

The CW released a first look at Odette Annable suited up as Reign on Supergirl. Since the series first began – airing season 1 on CBS before moving to The CW for season 2 – Supergirl has featured a number of female DC Comics villains. From one-off antagonists like Psi and Bizarro to more developed baddies like Livewire and Silver Banshee, and even to the big bads of each season – Astra, Indigo, Lillian Luthor, and Daxamite Queen Rhea – Supergirl has introduced a great deal of female villains for Kara Danvers to face.

In the final scene of the Supergirl season 2 finale, it was hinted that The CW series would introduce yet another female villain from the comics: Reign. On the hiatus between seasons 2 and 3, The CW cast Odette Annable as Reign, and though the actress made her debut as the seemingly human Samantha Arias in the Supergirl season 3 premiere, the creators behind the series have made no attempts to hide that the character will evolve into a major antagonist this season. Now, we have our first look at Reign on Supergirl.

The CW released a first look image (below) featuring Annable suited up as Reign on Supergirl in a costume that differs greatly to that of the comic book character. Although it’s unclear when exactly Samantha will officially become Reign (or where she’ll acquire the suit), she is expected to become the comic book villain later on in season 3. Take a look at the image below:

The headpiece that Annable wears is no doubt meant to make her look as alien as Reign does in the comics. However, the remainder of her costume is more like an all-black version of Supergirl’s own suit, though the Girl of Steel’s logo is replaced with a new sigil and, of course, the costume has pants rather than a skirt. Still, there are accents drawn from the design of the comic iteration of Reign, like the gauntlets, shoulder armor, and the style of her hair. So, while the costume is rather different than the suit Reign wears in the comics – and Reign herself looks incredibly different – the character still has some hints toward the books.

That said, it remains to be seen when Reign will make her official debut in Supergirl, and how closely the show will stay to the character’s comic book origin. In the comics, Reign was taken by Kryptonian scientists as a baby and experimented on to become a new Worldkiller – alongside four other babies who also became Worldkillers. In the Supergirl season 2 finale, we saw a group of Kryptonians save Reign from the planet’s destruction by sending her offworld in a pod. But, other than that, we know nothing about Reign’s history.

With Supergirl showing the evolution of Reign in season 3, though, we’ll no doubt learn more about Samantha’s backstory and how she becomes a supervillain antagonist for Kara. Until then, at least we know what costume Reign will sport once she does officially debut.
