Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud Strife Modded Into Super Smash Bros Melee

A Super Smash Bros. Melee modder recently showcased the gameplay for their newest character mod, Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud Strife. Cloud became a playable Super Smash Bros. franchise character in 2015, somewhat late in the series’ history after he was added to the roster as DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Wii U.

Super Smash Bros. mods can indulge in a variety of gameplay changes, such as porting the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features over to earlier franchise titles like Melee or inserting entirely new playable characters into the game. A series mod called Smash Remix consistently updates the first Super Smash Bros. game for Nintendo 64 by including later generation characters like Young Link and Lucas, as well as incorporating original character mods like Super Mario 64’s Mad Piano. Some modders enjoy bringing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters specifically into Melee due to its reputation as one of the most competitively viable games in the series.

GhostsPumpkinSoup recently showcased the gameplay for their upcoming Cloud Super Smash Bros. Melee character mod, which they described as a “work in progress.” The modder intends to incorporate Cloud’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mechanics into Melee to alter the swordsman’s moveset to fit Melee’s pacing and aesthetic. Even though they disclosed the project still has a lot of impending changes and additions, GhostsPumpkinSoup seems to be on the right track. One viewer commented, “I like how you gave it the [Melee] feel by making cross slash not work.” Another YouTube user also praised the mod’s authenticity, commenting, “Multi hit moves not connecting. Yep that’s melee.”

GhostsPumpkinSoup might have ported an Ultimate character in a different Super Smash Bros. game, but bringing new character creations into Ultimate might be a good alternative for those who aren’t pleased with the upcoming (and last) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC announcement. Although the game features over 80 playable fighters and only one DLC spot left, there are still many characters fans hope to see in Ultimate. There are theories that Halo’s Master Chief or the Super Mario franchise’s Waluigi could be the next and final DLC character, but some are vying for less conventional picks like Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney.

Even if hopes go unfulfilled after Nintendo’s official DLC announcement, current and future Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mods could provide some consolation. A recent mod adds a Mii costume of Master Chief’s armor to Ultimate, which means players can still enjoy such a crossover even if Nintendo leaves the Halo protagonist out of the Ultimate DLC roster. For now, though, the arrival of GhostsPumpkinSoup’s Super Smash Bros. Melee Cloud mod is worth looking forward to.
