Final Destination 6 Considered A “Reboot,” Script’s “Fresh Take” Teased In New Update

Final Destination 6 production designer Rachel O’Toole provides an update on the status of the new installment in the horror franchise, revealing the movie to be a “reboot“. After getting its start back in 2000, the twisted world of Final Destination is set to return with another film, which was confirmed to be in development in 2019, eight years after 2011’s Final Destination 5. However, since then, it’s been unclear just what approach the new sequel will take.

Now, in a recent interview with The Direct, O’Toole provides an update on Final Destination 6, seemingly confirming that the key creatives behind the film consider it a reboot instead of a sequel. The production designer also comments on the movie’s script and previously-planned filming start window, which has been complicated by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Check out O’Toole’s full comment below:

“Well, we started working, and then we were put on hold because of the writers’ strike. We were two weeks away from cameras. So we were deeply involved in building that world out. I would say, when I read the script, I was like, I continued wanting to read it.

“And sometimes when you’re reading a script, you’re just like, ‘Oh, okay, okay. Chuck this back, you know, like for the interview, pretend to love it.’ But I actually really did love it. It’s got a really fresh take on it, and we do consider it a reboot. But stay tuned, I suppose. I can’t say anything about it.”

What To Expect From Final Destination 6

Although the reboot was first announced back in 2019, there have been relatively few concrete details that have emerged about the project. The movie is going to be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, neither of whom have worked on the Final Destination franchise before. The script for the upcoming reboot comes from Guy Busick, Lori Evans Taylor, and Jeffrey Reddick.

As far as Final Destination 6‘s story goes, the film is expected to follow first responders, a premise that was first teased back in 2020. This group of first responders, which could include EMTs, firefighters, and police, will, as is franchise tradition, seemingly escape death in some form before they then start to meet their demises in a series of grisly accidents and mishaps.

As far as cast announcements go, Bloody Disgusting recently reported that Tony Todd will be reprising his role as William Bludworth, a character who first appeared in the 2000 original film. The same report also claims that the film will explore Bludworth’s backstory and childhood, although it’s not yet clear how this structure will intersect with the main storyline involving first responders. With the SAG-AFTRA strike still ongoing, it’s not yet clear when Final Destination 6 will actually get to start filming, and it seems like there’s still going to be a bit of a wait for the next installment.
