Fast & Furious: How Old Dominic Toretto Is In Each Movie

Dominic Toretto grew up a lot throughout the Fast & Furious franchise. The film series launched in 2001 and will span over two decades with the release of 10 installments, including F9 in 2021. Vin Diesel has played the central character throughout the franchise, but how old is Dom in each film?

While The Fast Saga continued to grow, so did Dom’s backstory. Born on August 29, 1976, Dom had an interest in cars from a young age. He became the primary supporter of his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster), after the death of their father. Dom also befriended Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), who would go on to become his longtime love interest. According to F9‘s trailer, Dom also has a brother named Jakob (John Cena), but the two seemingly have a tumultuous relationship.

When the franchise began, there was a belief that the films were set in the years they were released. This was later changed with a switch in the viewing order as well as Letty’s presumed death on May 30, 2009. So even though it was thought that Dom first encountered Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) in 2001, he first met the man a few years later. By the end of the franchise, Dom will most likely be in his mid-forties. Here’s a breakdown of the character’s age in each installment.

The Fast and the Furious (2001)

With the revelation that Letty’s death occurred in 2009, the timeline of the first film was retconned to 2004. Her car accident was said to have taken place five years after the events of The Fast and the Furious. Canonically, Dom would have been 24 or 25 years old if the film took place in 2001. With the 2004 timeline, he was around 27 or 28 due to the retcon.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

Further retcons  made the overall timeline a little murky. Even though The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was the third film to be released, it was actually set after Fast & Furious 6. This meant that the events were set in 2014, a decade after the start of the saga, making Dom 37 or 38 depending on the month of his cameo at the end of the movie.

Fast & Furious (2009)

Fast & Furious was set the same year that it was released. It followed Dom and Brian as they tried to avenge Letty’s death. Because it would have occurred after the month of May according to Letty’s tombstone, Dom would have been 32 years old. The short film, Los Bandoleros happened prior to the events of the film, making Dom 31 or 32.

Fast Five (2011)

Like Fast & Furious, the sequel, Fast Five, occurred the same year in which the movie was released. The movie focused on Dom, Brian, and their crew attempt to take down a corrupt businessman in Brazil while being pursued by the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service. During this drama, the central character was around the age of 34.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013)

Fast & Furious 6 followed the release date timeline with the movie set in 2013. When Dom found out that Letty was still alive while chasing mercenary Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), he was around 36. Following those events, Dom’s focus shifted on avenging Han (Sung Kang), taking him to Japan at the end of Tokyo Drift.

Furious 7 (2015)

Seeing as Furious 7 took place shortly after Tokyo Drift, Dom was still 37 or 38 years old. This installment abandoned the pattern of setting the movie in the year that it released. Instead, the events following the pursuit of Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) occurred in 2014.

The Fate of The Furious (2017)

The Fate of the Furious went back on track as the events of the film begin in 2017. At this point, Dom would be 40 or 41 depending on the month. Since Elena (Elsa Pataky) gave birth to their son after Fast & Furious 6, Dom would have become a father in his mid to late thirties. So technically, baby Brian should be a young child in the eighth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, not an infant.
