Fast & Furious/Back To The Future Mashup Joke Is Actually Perfect For Dom

Though it obviously wasn’t intended to be taken seriously, a recent mashup of Back to the Future and The Fast and the Furious highlights some interesting possibilities for the future of The Fast Saga. Now more than 20 years since the release of The Fast and the Furious, the franchise seems to be running out of ways to continue topping its last installment. The concept of a Fast & Furious movie featuring time travel seems absurd on paper, but with the state of the series being as it is, it may be just what The Fast Saga needs.

Instagram artist Bosslogic posted an image back in January bringing the two franchises together. The picture shows The Fast Saga frontman Dominic Toretto behind the wheel of Doc Brown’s iconic DeLorean from the Back to the Future series, complete with flashing lights and one of Marty McFly’s comic books. Bosslogic used the caption to bring yet a third franchise into the mix, suggesting a storyline in which the Fast family travel back in time to discover the source of speed only to run into The Flash’s Barry Allen, aptly dubbing the crossover “The Fast Point Paradox”.

Although Bosslogic’s mashup was certainly meant in jest, his glimpse into the future of The Fast and the Furious may prove to be closer to reality than it seems. After F9: The Fast Saga’s embracing of the space travel meme, the franchise has effectively become almost a parody of itself, leaving many to wonder where it could possibly go next. The series has a history of upping the ante with each passing installment, but it has left itself little room to continue to grow, meaning they will likely have to turn to the truly ridiculous in order to meet audience expectations. Using time travel as a story element would allow the remaining characters to revisit iconic scenes from past films, as well as potentially resurrect fallen members of the “family”, which would be a rather fitting (though admittedly absurd) end to Dominic Toretto’s story.

Fast & Furious/Back To The Future Mashup Joke Is Actually Perfect For Dom

Whether or not they choose to incorporate time travel into future projects, seeing Dom behind the wheel of a DeLorean would be a fun burst of nostalgia for viewers. Given that the Fast & Furious franchise revolves around cars, incorporating what is arguably one of the most famous cars in history wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. The DeLorean is not an exceptionally fast (or indeed functional) car, nor does it fit in particularly well with the aesthetic of the franchise, but bringing such an iconic piece of Americana into a future film would be a simple and effective way to continue elevating the already outrageous production value of the series.

A sincere crossover of The Fast and the Furious and Back to the Future would certainly be too ridiculous, but incorporating certain elements may prove to be advantageous to The Fast Saga in the long run. Bosslogic’s prodding at Dom’s infatuation with “family” is meant to make the concept sound more absurd, but it instead highlights precisely why it could work. Be it via a DeLorean and some cameo appearances or a trip through the Fast & Furious timeline, capitalizing on nostalgia has proven time and time again to be an effective method of elevating audience engagement, and The Fast Saga would be wise to take note.
