Franchise newcomer John Cena teases that Fast & Furious 9 will answer fans’ questions regarding the film series. Debuting as the movie’s antagonist, Jakob—Dom (Vin Diesel) and Mia’s (Jordana Brewster) brother, the character is supposedly out for revenge against his brother, although it’s unclear why. As Cipher (Charlize Theron) is tipped to be the overall villain of the saga’s ongoing trilogy, she returns in the film as an ally of Jakob.
The car-centric franchise has grown exponentially over the years, becoming one of the most popular film series in Hollywood. Kicking off in 2001, the Fast Saga currently has nine movies from the main line and one spin-off in Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s Hobbs & Shaw, not to mention tie-in films like Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow. Given its long history, there are some questions that have been carried over movie after movie — Cena reveals that these queries will be addressed in Fast & Furious 9.
During his recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the wrestler-turned-actor teased fans about what they can expect from Fast & Furious 9. While he obviously can’t reveal any specific plot details, he said that the upcoming blockbuster will somehow be a cumulative film, weaving narrative from earlier movies. It will also answer lingering questions fans have had over the years.
And the newest installment—everybody knows Fast is going to kill it when it comes to action. The thing I love about Fast 9 is people are going to see it weave that legacy together. It’s not nearly ‘What is Fast gonna do next for action;’ it is action on the edge of your seat, but story. If you’re a fan of the franchise, you get questions answered, you get new questions you can develop, it’s another foothold to the narrative. That’s the stuff that I love.
Fast & Furious 9 has a lot of explaining to do regarding so many things. For starters, Jakob is a massive mystery since Dom and Mia barely mentioned that they have a third sibling, who looks like he’d fit in their crew. For someone who harps on family and its importance, it’s odd that Dom has an estranged blood relative in Jakob, and since his brother seems to be motivated to kill him, chances are that there are some serious issues between them. Another pressing question is the return of Han Lue (Sung Kang) who’s supposed to be dead for a few years now following The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Aside from explaining how he survived, there’s also the #JusticeforHan movement, which the film promises to address. That said, without the culprit Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious 9, it’ll be interesting to see how this will be resolved. Finally, there’s also the question of Brian’s (Paul Walker) whereabouts since Mia is back with Dom and his team.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Fast & Furious 9 was pushed to an April 2021 release date instead of this year. So, fans would have to wait a bit more to find out the answers to these questions, although it’s unclear if the upcoming film will answer all these queries and more all at once. There’s still the 10th film in Fast Saga, so it’s possible that they’re saving some of these plotlines to be resolved then.
