If this morning’s batch of photos from next month’s Fast Five wasn’t enough to get fans of the Fast and the Furious franchise stoked for the film, then the full-length theatrical preview should help get the adrenaline pumping through their veins.
The official Fast Five trailer boils down to two and a half minutes of pure cinematic testosterone – complete with multiple car (and train) crashes, brawny men duking it out, babes in bikinis, and some of the more ludicrous physical stunts this side of Jackass.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for Fast Five:
Since Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) broke Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) out of custody, they’ve blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he’s not the only one on their tail.
Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can’t separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey…before someone else runs them down first.

Justin Lin helmed the previous two entries in the Fast and the Furious series (Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious), and he’s clearly quite experienced at shooting mile-a-minute chase sequences and hyper-kinetic fight scenes at this point. Each entry in this franchise has striven to up the ante by featuring even more awe-inspiring, property-wrecking set pieces, and Fast Five looks to be no exception.
Johnson returned to the action genre last year with Faster, but with Fast Five he should find the box office success that eluded his otherwise solid revenge thriller. That he will go mano-a-mano against Diesel – including the hard-hitting fist-fight glimpsed in this new trailer – should only further cement Johnson as being back on top of his tough-guy game.
As for Fast Five itself: moviegoers know all too well by now whether or not this franchise is their cup of tea. It ranks as one of the more highly-anticipated 2011 releases, and aims to be a big draw at the box office – so clearly the plans for Fast Five to kick off a new trilogy aren’t all that premature.
