Fast and Furious 5 Greenlit & Titled

Fast and Furious 5 Greenlit & Titled

Vin Diesel confirmed on his Facebook page that not one but TWO more The Fast and The Furious movies would get made. And although we’re not sure if that’s true for a sixth movie, today we’ve got confirmation that there will be a fifth film that reunites at least two of the cast members from the last installment, Fast & Furious.

Variety reports the news that another Fast and The Furious film has been greenlit by Universal and is currently entitled Fast Five. That’s right, they came up with an even dumber name than 2 Fast 2 Furious

Of course they may change it but if they do go with it – wow…

The studio has fully closed deals with the franchise’s two major players, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Director Justin Lin and writer Chris Morgan will be back to direct and write Fast Five, respectively, after working on the third and fourth movies together. Producer Neal Moritz will be back after producing the whole franchise so far.

There’s not much known about the plot at this time other than it will see Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker), “as fugitives being pursued by relentless lawmen.” Walker said back in April of last year that the fifth movie would see the characters head to Brazil but we’re not sure if that’s still the case or whether that was just some wishful thinking on his part.

It’s absolutely no surprise Universal wants to make another installment in this franchise. The return of the original cast made Fast & Furious the most successful installment of the franchise and Universal’s most successful film of 2009 (it made almost $350 million worldwide!). It’s no surprise either than Universal is getting this thing going pretty quickly, as shooting is set to begin this year for a release in 2011.

Fast and Furious 5 Greenlit & Titled

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Fast and Furious franchise: I liked the first one (I find it insanely rewatchable for some reason) but I thought the second was a lot of rap and macho nonsense and the third was even worse. The fourth I did get some enjoyment out of, mainly because it saw the original cast members come back (“New Model. Original Parts” as the tagline cleverly stated), but it certainly wasn’t anything great. I’m not really interested in another installment just because I suspect it will be more of the same. If that’s enough for you then great, but for me it needs to be something truly amazing for it to just repeat itself.

Are you excited to see another Fast and Furious film? What do you think of the current title?

As stated, Fast Five is set to start shooting sometime this year for a release in 2011.
