Fargo Season 5 Renewed At FX, Timeline & Story Details Revealed

Fargo season 5 has officially been renewed and a timeline and story details for the upcoming season have also been revealed. First airing on FX in 2014, Fargo is based on the 1996 Coen brothers’ film of the same name and captures the movie’s unique tone, violence, and sense of humor. Created by Noah Hawley, Fargo is an anthology series, with each season telling the story of a disparate group of characters across various eras, with a single crime usually precipitating an unexpected and often violent string of events that transpires over the course of each season.

Fargo‘s four seasons have all been nominated for Emmys, with the first season, featuring Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton, frequently cited as the show’s strongest. The latest season, which aired its final episode back in November of 2020, starred Chris Rock, Jason Schwartzman, Jessie Buckley, and Ben Wishaw and took place in the early 1950s. Fargo season 4 sees Rock play Loy Cannon, the leader of a black migrant crime syndicate fleeing persecution from the Jim Crowe South, who forms a volatile relationship with the Kansas City mafia.

Per FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier, Fargo has now been officially renewed for season 5 at the network. In addition to the confirmation, the announcement also gives a few details about what viewers can expect in terms of the season’s setting and storylines. The official synopsis reads: “Set in 2019, when is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn’t yours?” The logline is light on details, but it does at least give fans a small idea of what to expect when the show does eventually return. Check out Schrier’s official comment accompanying the announcement below:

“Noah and Warren have delighted and inspired fans through four brilliant chapters of Fargo and we’re thrilled to announce with our partners at MGM a new chapter of what has become one of TV’s best and most acclaimed series.”

Fargo Season 5 Renewed At FX, Timeline & Story Details Revealed

While the information included in the Fargo renewal announcement doesn’t let much slip about the season’s story, the details provided do hint that the upcoming season is more heavily inspired by the Coens’ original movie than previous seasons were. The 1996 movie tells the story of Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a struggling car salesman who arranges the kidnapping of his own wife in order to collect a ransom from her wealthy father. The plan, of course, completely falls apart and many of the participants end up dead, hinting at what might be to come in Fargo season five, which could be the show’s last, according to previous comments from Hawley.

Unfortunately, the announcement doesn’t include any details regarding when the fifth season of the show might arrive, meaning it’s likely still quite a while away from hitting TV screens. The creator, Hawley, is also in the middle of production on his Alien series for FX, which might further delay the arrival of the new season. When it does release, however, it certainly sounds like this new season of Fargo will be closest yet in terms of its relationship to the Coen brothers’ original cult classic movie.
