Far Cry 6 Easter Egg Retcons History To Bring Back Goodest Boy Boomer

Far Cry 6 features an Easter egg that supposedly retcons the death of beloved animal companion Boomer from Far Cry 5. Ubisoft’s newest open-world game follows the familiar formula seen in many of the Far Cry games, with players being dropped into the expansive country of Yara and asked to defeat the dastardly Anton Castillo and his armed forces. Included in the familiarity is the return of animal companions that can be commanded by Dani Rojas to aid them in battle – but this Easter egg reveals Boomer’s fate from a previous game.

Far Cry 5 implemented the Fangs For Hire system, which let players discover three specific animal companions to partner with throughout the game. Along with Peaches the cougar and Cheeseburger the bear, players were able to team up with a scruffy dog named Boomer that quickly became a fan favorite.

The salt-and-pepper Boomer captured the hearts of many Far Cry 5 players, which made it all the more sad when one of the game’s canonical endings saw Hope County, Montana engulfed in a nuclear explosion that seemingly took the life of the poor puppy, along with many others. Some still held onto the notion that Boomer had somehow survived the explosion, but a gravestone found in the post-apocalyptic Far Cry New Dawn featured the dog’s name and seemingly squashed all hope of his survival. However, Far Cry 6 may have retconned this tragic loss with an appearance from the loveable companion.

How Boomer Features Into Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 features the Amigos For Hire system that allows players to recruit a host of different animals to pal around with, including the wheelchair-bound dachshund Chorizo and the gold-toothed crocodile Guapo. Boomer’s appearance as a companion comes during the mission Boom or Bust, which has Dani Rojas breaking open a handful of shipping containers in search of weapons. While a majority of the containers host pumas looking to inflict harm, Dani can eventually stumble upon one that includes a dog that looks exactly like Far Cry 5’s Boomer.

After speaking to Juan Cortez about the importance of naming an animal to give it an identity, Dani decides to name the dog Boom Boom, which seems like a fun nod from Ubisoft about the identical nature of the dog to Boomer. That could have ended it, but the inclusion of a note inside the shipping container states that Boom Boom was sent to Yara from Montana by “some crazy American” named Hurk to give him a better life. Longtime Far Cry fans should recognize the name, as Hurk Drubman, Jr. has appeared in several games in the series, including Far Cry 5 as a Guns for Hire.

All of this evidence adds up to establish that the dog inside the shipping container in Far Cry 6 actually is Boomer. It seems that Hurk was able to get the furry companion out of Hope County, Montana before the nuclear explosion in Far Cry 5, avoiding the animal’s death that so many assumed had taken place. This gives the gravestone found in Far Cry New Dawn more context, as it seems that those who survived the explosion couldn’t find any evidence of Boomer’s survival and assumed he didn’t make it, which led to the establishment of a grave to honor his legacy. Fans who mourned the loss of their best dog pal Boomer can rejoice, as the goodest boy lives on to help Dani save Far Cry 6’s Yara.
