Falling For Christmas: 9 BTS Facts Fans Didn’t Know About The Netflix Movie

Netflix’s Falling for Christmas became an instant success, largely in part because of Lindsay Lohan’s return to acting. The romantic comedy joined Netflix’s Top 10 list and has given audiences every cheesy and amazing trope anyone could want in a holiday movie.

After the cast and crew were spotted filming in the winter of 2021, fans of Christmas cheer couldn’t wait for this movie’s release. And now that it’s here, fans only want to know more about the behind-the-scenes magic that took place between Logan, Chord Overstreet, and the rest of the main cast.

Lindsay Lohan Was Proposed To On Set

If viewers wondered where they’ve seen the cast of Falling for Christmas before, they would have recognized Chord Overstreet (Jake Russell) from Glee and George Young (Tad Fairchild) from Containment. With Lohan as the star, fans already recognized her from Mean Girls, The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and more.

With the attention on Lohan, she didn’t want to draw even more attention to her when her then-boyfriend, Bader Shammas, proposed to her while she was shooting Falling for Christmas. According to Yahoo!, Lohan said on The Drew Barrymore Show, “The hardest thing was he proposed to me on the set of Falling For Christmas. Not (literally) on the set, but off set when we were filming, and I had to not tell anyone because I didn’t want it to distract it from our work and stuff so I was holding in that I was engaged,”

Filming Took Place In A Snowy Destination

Falling for Christmas was supposed to take place in Aspen. That’s where Sierra’s family’s hotel chain was located, along with some seriously snowy slopes. In reality, however, a majority of the film was shot in Utah.

Utah, especially Salt Lake City, is a popular filming location for Hallmark movies, and with Falling for Christmas having that Hallmark Christmas spirit, it made sense that the movie would film there as well to get the same vibe.

Lohan Has A Debut Single On The Soundtrack

Fans of Lohan’s noticed a Mean Girls Easter egg almost immediately in Falling for Christmas. When Sierra and Tad were in the car on their way to a snowy destination, the song “Jingle Bell Rock” came on the radio.

Sierra quickly started singing the song, getting into the Christmas spirit. This song, of course, was added to the movie intentionally and not by accident. One of the moments that live rent-free in Mean Girlsfans’ heads was the time Lohan’s character sang “Jingle Bell Rock” at the school’s talent show. Adding Lohan’s voice to Falling for Christmas’s soundtrack (and this scene) was a fun BTS tidbit.

Viewers Can Stay At The Belmont Family’s Hotel

In the movie, Sierra Belmont is a hotel heiress who’s bound to take over her family’s business. The only problem was that she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with her life, and the title her father gave her (Vice President of Atmosphere) was made up just to keep her busy.

The fictional Belmont Summit Resort was swanky, high-end, and in a dream location. In reality, however, there is no Belmont Summit Resort. According to Dirt, the hotel Belmont Summit Resort scenes were filmed at Park City’s The Residences at Goldener Hirsch. Meanwhile, the North Star Lodge scenes were filmed at two different Beehive State locations.

Why Did Lindsay Lohan Return To Acting For This Specific Movie?

Lohan’s stardom was huge from the time she was a child actress to the mid-2000s. However, around 2014 and 2015, Lohan wasn’t in as many projects. This all changed within the past two years, which made fans wonder Why now?

In an interview with Vogue, Lohan was asked what drew her to the movie and the role of Sierra Belmont. And as it turned out, it was because she had never done a Christmas movie before. “As you get older in life, and you move away from your family, you get more nostalgic for the holidays. You want to be near [your family] and be around for the holidays more. So I was really excited to film in America and to be closer to home,” she said honestly. After the movie’s success, Lohan could be the next Christmas movie actress to look out for.

Chord Overstreet Became Close With The Lohan Family

Falling for Christmas had one of the better Christmas movie tropes with Sierra falling for someone unpredictable, like Jake. Before her accident and meeting Jake, Sierra lived comfortably with a glam squad and stylist. A small fact about Falling for Christmas is that Lohan’s younger sister, Ali Lohan, actually played Sierra’s stylist, Bianca. The role was small but it became a family affair with Lohan’s family members joining.

In an interview with US Magazine, Overstreet said “[Lohan] was really chill and I got really close with her fiancé and her younger brother who’s pretty much like my younger brother now. … We just kind of bunkered down in Park City and had a great time and got to make some movies.”

Big-Time Christmas Names Were Behind This Film

Lohan wasn’t the only big name attached to this movie. Falling for Christmas was directed by Janeen Damian, the same name behind A Princess for Christmas, The Christmas Waltz, A Crown for Christmas, and more.

Falling for Christmas was also executive produced by Brad Krevoy and Amanda Phillips — the same names behind the A Christmas Princetrilogy and The Princess Switchtrilogy. With so many all-star names in the Christmas world, Falling for Christmas was bound to be a success.

Chord Overstreet Almost Played A Different Role

While Overstreet went on to play Sierra’s love interest, Jake, he was first thinking about playing one of the more iconic Christmas movie characters, Tad Fairchild.

Tad was Sierra’s unlikely fiancé. The only thing they had in common was living lavish lifestyles and having a love for fashion. Tad was dramatic, selfish, and unaware. Once Sierra met Jake, she realized she was with the wrong person. Funny enough, Overstreet told E!, “Initially, they wanted me to play the fiancé [Tad] with the English accent.” However, Overstreet wasn’t confident in his English accent and opted for Jake instead.

A Food Fight Broke Out On Set

It’s hard to say if Falling for Christmas is one of the best Christmas movies of the last decade, but it does hit viewers in the feels with that jolly, Christmastime warmth.

The chemistry on-screen could be felt by viewers, and that’s largely in part to how close the group got off-camera while filming. While talking to E!, Overstreet said the group was so comfortable with each other that a food fight broke out on set. The food fight wasn’t scripted but parts of it wound up making the cut.
