Mediatonic, the developers behind the megahit Fall Guys, instituted an island specifically for cheaters in the game, but it did not go the way that was originally planned. Cheater Island was put in place fairly soon after Fall Guys’ launch due to rampant cheating issues with the game that rival that of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but after complications it has now been disabled. The developers are instead adding in a new Anti-Cheat software to handle cheating in the game.
Fall Guys was an immediate hit with fans all around the world, and features cute characters, fun multiplayer gameplay, and even promotes accessibility with its simple controls, which could all contribute to it being such a big success as a more family-friend party game battle royale type experience. Fall Guys managed to attract 1.5 million players on its first day and by August it managed to sell over seven million copies on Steam alone (it’s also available on PlayStation 4).

According to the official Fall Guys Twitter account, the developers have been dealing with cheaters since the beginning, and the method of handling the situation turned out differently than expected. In a very long Twitter thread it was explained that the Mediatonic put in its very own cheat detection software in Fall Guys. All cheaters in the game were relegated to what Mediatonic referred to as “Cheater Island”. Since there weren’t many cheaters at first the idea was they would get stuck falling forever and never able to join a match. As more cheaters populated the game however and cheaters matches were being held, Mediatonic realized that it had no way to keep track of whether new complaints of cheating were coming from Cheater Island or normal matches.
Things became complicated quickly as there were so many matches being played that Mediatonic was unable to determine which matches cheaters were in. It finally decided to scrap Cheater Island entirely and make it to where anyone who has been caught cheating can’t login anymore. More than that though, the company decided to get in contact with Epic Games and will now be employing the same anti-cheat software that Fortnite uses from here on out. This should hopefully deter any future cheating and hacks in the game.
Cheating has always been a pretty large issue with online video games, and its an even bigger problem with smaller games like Fall Guys whose development team isn’t prepared cheating on such a large scale. Luckily for Mediatonic, this situation mostly turned out to be funny, but cheaters did eventually prevent the developers from doing their job properly. The new anti-cheat software should make Fall Guys players much happier going forward.
