Falcon & Winter Soldier Fan Art Envisions a New Captain America

A Marvel fan and artist has created artwork that imagines what Falcon might look like as Captain America, and gives Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier, a new super suit. In Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, chooses to stay in the past with the love of his life, Peggy Carter. At the end of Endgame, he turns up as an old man in the present-day, shield in hand, ready to hand it off to the next man worthy of becoming Captain America.

That man was Sam Wilson, aka Falcon. This is a significant turning point for the character, and the actor who portrayed him, Anthony Mackie, originally learned that this would happen by having drinks with Steve Rogers actor Chris Evans, before the filming of that pivotal scene. Knowing that Evans would step down from the role after Endgame, many fans had already assumed that the shield would go to Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier, Steve’s best friend, but even Bucky’s actor, Sebastian Stan, was never sure that might happen. In the end, Sam was the man deemed worthy to carry on the tradition of Captain America.

But what will Sam’s version of the Cap look like? One Marvel fan, spdrmnkyxxiii, created art that shows an idea of what the new Captain America might resemble. The artwork also features Bucky as Winter Soldier, sporting a new outfit.

Falcon becoming Captain America isn’t a new concept. In Marvel Comics, Sam became Captain America after Steve lost the Super Soldier Serum (which dramatically aged him). Even after Steve regained the serum, the two shared the title, although Sam held onto the shield, which is a good thing because the Cosmic Cube later transformed Steve into a villain. Fortunately, the real Steve Rogers returned at the end of the story arc, and eventually, Sam returned the shield to him.

One thing is unclear, though. Disney recently confirmed a Falcon and Winter Soldier television series for its upcoming streaming subscription service Disney Plus. Although the title of the show refers to Sam as Falcon and not Captain America, it’s unclear how him receiving the shield will play into the series or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel fans, though, remain hopeful that they’ll finally get to see Sam as the new Captain America, either on the series, in future movies or both. It’s an exciting transition for both the character and fans who can’t wait to see what happens next.
